How pesticides leach into the environment
Study “analysed the geographic distribution of 92 of the most commonly used agricultural pesticides, found that approximately 70,000 tonnes of potentially harmful chemicals leach into aquifers each year, impacting ecosystems and freshwater resources.”

“About three million tonnes of agricultural pesticides are used across the globe each year, yet little is known about where or in which environments these chemicals end up after their initial application."

“730 tonnes of pesticides enter rivers each year, with about 13,000 kilometres of rivers reaching chemical concentrations above safety limits for a number of aquatic plants and invertebrates, with poorly understood consequences on rivers’ ecosystems.”

Fossil water -- underground reservoirs trapped in rock -- accounts for up to 85% of all groundwater. Billions of people rely on fossil aquifers for their drinking water and as irrigation to grow staple food crops.

But ancient these reserves are running dry. Experts predict that by 2025, over 60% of humanity will experience water scarcity.

Discoveries of often create excitement around their ability to ease water scarcity in a region.

For instance, about 10 years ago a large aquifer was discovered in Kenya’s Turkana region. This is one of the hottest, driest parts of Kenya and it frequently suffers from drought.

The government claimed that the aquifer could supply the entire country with water for 70 years.

such as restore (this pic is one of mine, in ), get water back into , prepare for bigger rainstorms & also bigger storm surges with rising seas.

My recent book is about the period since the channelization was complete, which coincides with a massive uptick in trade thru the -LongBeach complex. In addition to bringing into view the global systems of petroleum, trade, & US militarism that run thru San Pedro Bay, it thinks about life in this area+

‘How Sensor-Dangling Helicopters Can Help Beat the

“After weeks of near-constant and , is finally drying out—but hopefully not getting too dry, because the state needs all the rain it can get to pull itself out of a historic . ...

“A simultaneous solution to both extremes is right beneath Californians’ feet: . …

“California’s is loaded with such aquifers, capable of storing some 46 trillion gallons of water, three times as much as all the state’s reservoirs. But this part of the state has long over-exploited them. …

“That’s led to a dramatic imbalance, says hydrogeologist of UC Davis, who studies California’s aquifers. ‘Civilizations all across the world have been really expert at sucking groundwater virtually uncontrollably, but we've been terrible at putting water back in the ground,’ he says. ‘It's kind of like mismanagement of a bank account, where you get really good at withdrawing funds but you ignore deposits for decades and decades.’ ...

“But Fogg and his colleagues have a plan to balance the state’s water budget: using giant sensors dangling from helicopters and towed behind ATVs to strategically target certain areas for aquifer recharging. They just need to find the spots with the right geology.”

Hey western states, repopulate your watersheds with and let them recharge your aquifers for free!!!

“But growing demand for coupled with change has resulted in shortages as states pump out water from faster than they can be replenished.
The fallout can also lead to damaged vegetation and as run dry and damage to and control structures from sinking land.”
