This was a very interesting watch on Palestinian #SciFi. I thoroughly recommend people to not only give it a watch, but give all of these authors a read. They all publish in English/are translated.
Personally, a lot of what they said about #sff resonated with me and made me consider a new way to read and write the genre.

Its taken a while to post about Ismail Sabri Basha because of how scarce information is about him in English is and I always try to point people to available sources.
Born in Egypt, graduated from law in France, he was one of the 19th and 20th century literati who developed Neo-Classicist Arabic writing. If not for him, among others, Arabic music and literature would not be where it is today.

A bit late so here's a good nighttime poem. This is only a snippet and full poem is in the link:
"The stars in the sky upon us testify
My heart or its transgressing eyelid
The night drags on in infatuation
Sleep distances from the insomniac eyelid"

Been wanting to post about this book, but keep forgetting. Anyways, here's my rec that you all should read Ahmed Sadaawi's Frankenstein in Baghdad.
It takes place in the middle of Baghdad bombings where a junk dealer stitches together random body parts, but a soul without a body takes it becoming an Iraqi made entirely out of Iraqis.
I especially like how it delves into folklore around St. George.

Today, I would like to introduce you to the book which opened my eyes into the world of pre-modern Arab women.
It is in English, but is one of the most comprehensive women's histories of middle and upper class Arab women from the Fatimid Era (909–1171).
More so, it showcases that contrary to popular thought, Arab women had their own longstanding literary salon culture that wasn't borrowed from Europeans

The #Arab poets Khalil Gibran and May Ziade wrote on "love of the soul over the flesh".
Both never married nor saw each other's faces, but shared a deep love for each other purely through their writings.
My own #writing and #novel has a main couple who share a love of the mind and soul long before any sexual interactions.
Anyone can rec any stories you or another has written which does this?

I have not talked to him yet, but just checked out @tillgrallert 's bio and he has linked Project Jarāʾid which is a list of Arabic periodicals from 1800- 1929.
I'm linking the Bibliography part cause some people have asked me about sources and there are a ton of great stuff there in English, Arabic and French.

Today I translated a poem by May Ziade (1886-1941). She was many things: intellectual, feminist, romantic, writer, poet, polyglot and musician. Her literary salons helped shape Modern Arabic Literature.
She was born a Maronite Christian and lived in Palestine, Lebanon and Egypt. Here is a #documentary about her tragic life, but I warn you the comments on women's education are overexaggerated and a bit false.

"Between second to second,
Hope dies and Despair lives
A lip smiles and an eye tears up
A friend betrays and an enemy dies
Between second to second"

I must recommend Al-Ma'arri's Epistle of Forgiveness (رسالة الغفران) to any fans of Dante's The Divine Comedy.
The story is about a poet who journeys through Heaven and hell just to meet other Arabic speaking poets and talk about poetry. It is a precursor to the Divine Comedy, but they likely had the same source material.
My personal favorite sections are when he meets the djinn and talks to the devil.

I want to show off this short video which explains the neo-classical Arabic poetry movement in the 19th century pretty concisely.
In summary, the movement was largely in Egypt, but also in Lebanon and Syria and took the idea that poetry should have Classical Arabic form with contemporary thought.

Mawaal (موال) #poetry is a sung colloquial poetry popular throughout the Middle East. In #Egypt, its origins can be traced to pharaonic times.
Ismail Sabri Basha (1854-1923) created a five line Mawaal poem switching the qaf (ق) with the (آ) sound as is done in Egyptian Arabic.
I will not be translating this poem because a friend did so to explain it to me, but I will be looking for a different one to translate in the future.

In both Arabic and English, I have not located her writings and #poetry so naturally, I have to tell people about the Lebanese, born-Egyptian writer Alexandra Avierino (1872-1937)
Born to an Orthodox Christian family, she founded the Arabic women's journal "The Sociable Companion" (أنيس الجليس).
Attached is the cover of a 1898 issue of this very magazine.
P.S. If anyone could tell me where to find her writings, I'd appreciate it.

Earlier today I posted a poem by Baha al-Din Zuhayr (1186-1258). He was an Egyptian who became the secretary to the Ayyubid prince Salah Ayub, the man who would become the last Ayyubid ruler before the Mamluks rose to power.
If you guys are interested in seeing a more professionally translated collection of his poems, I am posting an Amazon link to an 1877 translation of his poems by E.H. Palmer

Earlier I posted a quote by one of my favorite authors and biggest influences, Edwar al-Kharrat. Now, I'd like to share two of his novels available in the original Arabic and English:
Rama and the Dragon
Stones of Bobello
These #novels are perfect for fans of New Weird or Weird fiction authors like Gene Wolfe, as well as people who like stories that blur the line between reality, dreams and folklore.
