These two strategies are in tension: the more you censor, the less you know about the true feelings of your citizens and the easier it will be to miss serious problems until they spill over into the streets (think: the fall of the or Tunisia before the ). Dictators try to square this circle with things like private opinion polling or petition systems, but these capture a small slice of the potentially destabiziling moods circulating in the body politic.

3/ : I started on Twitter in 2009 as a quirky way to exchange ideas and fun with people all over the world, and to possibly promote my business. I never did gain much traction there with business although I made many friends, some of which I met IRL.

The potential for Twitter to be a space for progress became evident with the in 2011, a thrilling time of getting actual eyewitness news from the ground in the moment it was happening. I loved Twitter through all that and so appreciated every voice speaking out. There had never been anything like that before.

Then the drama deescalated for a few years and I actually thought the site was dying — until 2016. That horrific candidacy anointed Twitter as its media of choice, and suddenly the site was on everyone’s mind again. It was shocking how quickly the site became hateful at that point, but it was also where a huge surge of , especially with marginalized groups, had a space to respond and educate. I came to rely on Twitter for , , , , , voices. I learned a ton.

So that’s what I’ve missed most since I basically abandoned Twitter in November 2022. For the next few months, I established myself on TikTok and Mastodon and had to work hard to recreate some semblance of what I had been using Twitter for. Now, I do not miss Twitter at all. My account is still there so I can keep the name, but it’s dead in the water.

Twitter, once integral to historical events like the , is now reduced to a pitiful web service built on chickenwire and bubble gum.

@escarpment @chrismessina Yes but from graphic design point of view would suck. Without the hashtag you’ll have: “Police brutality in Tripoli. Arab Spring” vs “Police brutality in Tripoli. ” . Which one is more elegant and readable?

Funny enough, this is what Biz Stone told me in 2007 when I pitched him the idea for the hashtag (which he rejected).

I get it, but how would an LLM label , , or ?

Unless you don't want the people to self-organize?

@millerpeace damn, it really makes you think how you can trust anyone. Wasn't this Saied guy a former human rights lawyer? Now he's just another authoritarian. The failure of the to usher in literally any success story is one of the most depressing things I can think of. I remember being a kid and seeing it happen amd then seen happen and thinking that I'd grow up in a rapidly changing society only to instead feel like everything is becoming like the 1930s again
