Not sure what to hashtag with this question, but is there anyone out there who knows anything about / ? This guy has been in my yard for a couple of days and I was curious what it is, and if my dog and I should keep our distance.

Do spiders ever fall in love?

Not with humans. With each other.

I’ve been watching (and filming) the most dramatic soap opera of long-bellied cellar spiders playing out on the ceiling over the past month. Safe to say I’ve seen some weird shit. I can’t explain what I’m seeing now.

After cavorting with two partners for a month, my lady mama spider has herself an egg sac—and a companion? The second partner has not left her side. He still dances for her sweet lovin but she’s kinda got an egg sac in her mouth soooo no. She’ll jab at him if he gets too close for comfort, but then she reaches out a foreleg and they touch tips, and she’s like “Hey. Chill. It’s ok.” and he’ll settle down again.

What is this? Clearly he still wants sex and isn’t getting any, but also isn’t leaving. She seems to want him to stay. Their body language still mirrors one another. Could they have bonded? Is he gonna be a daddy to the babies that 50/50 may/may not be his? Or…? 🧐

Da trägt ein kleines schwarzes Insekt, geschätzt 7mm lang, eine deutlich größere Webspinne durch die Gegend. Also konkret die Hauswand entlang. :blobcatthink: Jemand ne Ahnung, worum es sich handelt?

/ question about preservation: I have been gifted a tick which I would like to Collect. I don't have access to, like, sciency stuff. Which is better for wet specimens? I can get 70-95% isopropyl alcohol, or hand sanitizer which uses ethyl alcohol but also invariably has other stuff like aloe, glycerin, etc., and I don't know if that will affect the specimen or label. I guess I could also go to the liquor store?

A Spitting Spider (Scytodes thoracica) in my hallway last week. This one gets its name from squirting a sticky gum at its prey. Apparently the most recorded habitat of this species is in the homes of arachnologists. It must have heard that I recently finally go around to sending off my spider records! In .

New on Entomology Today: Sociality in spiders is quite rare, but a new species found in Madagascar takes it a step further. Isoxya manangona kite spiders build large colonies of webs, all connected by a central silk line where multiple adult males gather harmoniously. Researchers suggest the males could be "lekking," gathering in a group to perform mating displays for females, a behavior never before seen in spiders. entomologytoday.org/2023/03/30

Catching up on my Journal of backlog…the aggregations of silken nests created by social pseudoscorpions (_Paratemnoides elongatus_) are nearly as efficient as honeybee 🐝 cells! :pseudoscorpion:

📄 Chapin KJ, Kittle A, Dornhouse A 2022. Social pseudoscorpion nest architecture provides direct benefits to group members and rivals the efficiency of honey bees. _Journal of Arachnology_ 50:323-334 doi.org/10.1636/JoA-S-21-017 :ClosedAccess: [DM for PDF]
