Unfortunately, the Philippine Republic was betrayed by the United States who at first helped the Filipinos fight Spain because of the ongoing Spanish–American War. After the U.S. defeated Spain, it bought the Philippine Islands for $20 million.

The Philippine–American War then broke out in February 1899 and Aguinaldo was forced north. So it was at the Holy Rosary Church in Angeles, Pampanga that Aguinaldo celebrated the anniversary of the declaration of independence.

During the final months of the Philippine Revolution, Gen. Emilio Aguinaldo declared the independent from Spain 🇪🇸 on 12 June 1898 at his ancestral house in Kawit, Cavite, now preserved as the Aguinaldo Shrine. It was there that the “Acta de la proclamación de independencia del pueblo Filipino” was read, the Philippine flag 🇵🇭 was formally displayed for the first time, and the Marcha Nacional Filipina, which would later become the national anthem, was played.

Six years ago today our flag was raised, in the midst of fight against the ISIS-inspired Maute group to liberate Marawi. Today, we remember the people who sacrificed their lives so that we could live freely in a secure, peaceful and prosperous environment. Let us cherish our freedom, and protect it with all our might so that it will never be snatched again from us. 🇵🇭🇵🇭🇵🇭
