Had a delightful conversation with Richard Davies for his Book Stories podcast about our Green Book project. Enjoy!
(Kinda wish he'd used an image of the Green Book instead of me...)

Gotta love it when architecture lies to you!
A cute little wooden shed? Nope! It's concrete designed to look like anything but concrete.
The walls are a single slab, but textured to look like wood plank. The roof is cast to reflect shingles (WHY?!?). Ultimately, all is revealed by the damage to the roof, which pulls back the curtain on the fraud.
It neither stands out nor fits in. Why why why can't this poor building just be what it is?

@modinmetro Oakwood -- that's interesting, I had never worked out that CH James did a station. There's a good chapter on him in the big Historic England book on Neo-Georgian -- about his domestic work and Norwich Town Hall, mostly. I'd better take a look at this! #ArchitecturalHistory

Looking down the servant stairs at The Elms, in Newport, RI.
For "backstage" stairs, they are quite fancy, but they are dreadfully uncomfortable to climb; the rise/run ratio is way off. Can't imagine climbing up and down those with a full plate of food (which they didn't do, because there was a dumbwaiter).

The architecture of Michael Hopkins had significant demonstration value in terms of serious consideration of environmental impacts, and in its thoughtful modes of contextual and historical thinking as well as structural and material innovation. If his works list looks like part of an establishment (so many prestige cultural commissions) there were also always smaller scale works. He was no stooge for city maketing. #ArchitecturalHistory #MichaelHopkins Guardian obituary: https://www.theguardian.com/artanddesign/2023/jun/19/sir-michael-hopkins-obituary

seeking distraction from today's real tasks in #ArchitecturalHistory -- I have noticed that a church of the 1840s in Streatham Hill, South London (one I looked at for years from a cheap rented room), is twinned with the British Legation (Embassy) in Tehran. Both are by J.W. Wild, who must have been fond of square pyramidal forms. As an ambitious mid-C19 architect he followed his own lines -- influenced by contemp German architecture , exhibition sheds, etc.
