Some contemporary architectural design elements can let water penetrate the envelope:
- Boxy designs with articulated walls that jut in and out have gutters that are not straight.
- Ledges where wall materials change
- Box gutters without sumps
- Sky lights
- Flat roof
- Balconies

A novel method for estimating precipitation in climate datasets for hygrothermal analysis.
