HELP WANTED!
I've finally got transferred an open reel I bought from a recycling shop in , ON, many many years ago.
Unfortunately I have no idea the artist, album, or song names!
Do you recognize any of the music, vocals or instrumentation in this sample I've prepared?

- Four tracks total
- Written on the box: NEON Rough Mixes
- AMPEX 456 Master Reel

Thanks!

I bought a basically unlabeled 10" NAB Ampex 345 Master Studio reel-to-reel tape about 7-8 years ago, from a recycling center in Toronto.
I finally had it professionally tape-baked and transferred, and will pour over what the heck is on it; most likely posting it to archive.org.

Seems the FTP server is dead... which took a LOT of old manuals with it. Not sure HOW long it's been gone, but it's certainly not on archive.org...

ftp://ftp.brother.ca/

Does anyone have archives or manual downloads from there?

Looking fruitlessly for this one in particular.

So, after sunsetting that rails app, what I would love to do is preserve the app together with the data and all dependencies in some form.

To make this somewhat future proof, I thought about building a docker container and save that as a single file.

But maybe a disk image that could boot a VM is better if we think about long term archival?

Any ideas on that anyone?

Hello and ! I’m completely rethinking my Intro to course. I’m hoping to add a lot more non-Western perspectives and resources, as well as contemporary in the field.

What new , , and initiatives do you think would be good for intro students to read/ know about?

About : How did humidity control & management work when electrical dehumidifiers weren't an option? If other compressor-based dehumidifiers were used prior, what about before those?

Was it even done?

On , , and the importance of libraries as .

The linked article has some unsavory takes though (particularly around gender studies), but the Fedi conversation around this thread is still interesting.

Folks working in and :
I have some small books that have a musty, mold like smell. There is no visible mold.
I'd like to try and get rid of the scent, they scan and shelve them all in sealed plastic containers.

My current idea is baking soda in a sealed container, put the book(s) in for up to 7 days.

Is this viable, or is some sort of other option better? Mini ozone generator? Some other powder to remove scents? Active carbon?
Thanks!

So, random thought, but maybe reducing the physical mediums is a dangerous act? As in, when we do discover an ancient work it’s typically because there were either lots of physical copies or physical copies were accidentally preserved well and protected from ignorant looters.

@nytpu I think that's more businesses being filled with idiots that don't care about and .

"Worth" shouldn't really be a factor at all.

If I had my way, governments would invest a *lot* more in those multi-century lifespan archival optical discs to try & make that petabyte disc (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hyper_CD) a thing so that long-term archival in government-provided facilities similarly to various already existing national archives would become vastly more widespread.

Here's a quote from a YouTube video I heard earlier today. 'In the modern age of the internet, we live by the motto that if something is online, it stays there. But the truth is that our creations are bound, sooner or later, to be cast into obscurity and forgotten'. Truer words were never spoken, and that's why, if you come across any you and/or others find valuable, I very strongly urge you to back it up and archive it anywhere you can, in as many places you can, be it OneDrive, Dropbox, the Internet Archive or your own website or file storage server. Let's work together to fight and preserve as much of our online creations and discoveries as we possibly can!

Bit the bullet and got myself a 4-bay :3

The sheer volume of data that I'm making each week, let alone each month, has been staggering.

I record every single stream that I do, no exception. I know many of my colleagues don't but I do not trust to hold onto vids forever. I want to keep my my memories in any way that I can.

Oldest VOD's are copied to Blu-ray for long term archival.

@mattl actually, no.

Because doing inhouse - espechally when it comes to the legally mandatory systems - is pretty much cheaper as soon as there are triple-digit-employees.
