Vilified by weirdos who worry about the aesthetics of their "lawns", I find charming and fascinating. If anything, folks should be thanking them for de-grubbing their turf!

AAAS: "Leprosy spurs growth in armadillo livers, offering clues to organ regeneration" Armadillos have long been know to be peculiarly susceptible to infection with Mycobacterium leprae, the agent of leprosy. One curiosity is that the infected liver grows about 1/3 larger without loss of function. The bacteria are taken up by the Schwann cells which surround the axons of nerve fibers, which usually serve to provide insulation of the electrical impulses, but with infection they revert to a more primitive stem cell that is able to support liver growth. Even in humans an uninfected liver is the champion of regeneration — if 2/3 of the organ is resected, the remainder is able to regrow to fill the entire vacated space left. But with a diseased liver such as alcoholic cirrhosis this regrowth is not possible. The advantage of liver enlargement to the bacteria in an armadillo may be expanded living habitat. The advantage for researchers is a new research subject which may provide insights into supporting liver regeneration in humans.

I spend one slide of my lectures a year on leprae, usually in the context of its dysfunctional & that it can only be cultivated in . Plot twist: infection with these help promote host liver regeneration doi.org/10.1016/j.xcrm.2022.10
