oops i forgot that because i use #zfs i have to do a deferred launch of #Arq because i have to unlock half a dozen filesystems via ssh before i login to windowserver and apparently i haven't done that in quite a while :grimace:

the good news is that the only things likely to have changed since july are things on zpools and those are redundant and backed up via #znapzend!

Upgraded to #Arq 7 today. Downloaded app and installed it. Apparently they tie the app to the license or something, and the app they gave me has someone else’s license on it. Sounds odd right? Backups are dead now, perhaps Arq is the wrong way to go these days. Any good alternatives for macOS that let you backup to your own storage area?

for some reason #Arq is unable to complete a local backup due to an APFS snapshot being unmounted. except the filesystem in question is on #zfs?

does Arq think it's creating APFS snapshots on a zfs filesystem?!

oy how do i find out what process is destroying APFS snapshots that #Arq is creating? i have my Photos.app library across SSDs externally and something clipped it and i don't know what why or even how because it should have held it open

@dhrystone alright so if WSL2 lets you view the filesystems of a windows workstation you could use borg there, a quick search indicates there isn't a windows flavor of borg though i suppose if you are really good at python and like tinkering the windows python distribution may be workable.

#Arq is available for Windows though and as you've figured out by now, my hands-down favorite backup tool ;)

@dhrystone when you're talking object stores they're all very similar and you can construct buckets to contain whatever backups/datasets/scheme that suits your purposes.

in #Arq however a target destination for backups is machine-specific, encrypted, and deduped, and it also really wants you to use a per-workstation bucket. i create new creds for each destination used by Arq.

but the backups my NAS do use HyperBackup.

in some threads i mention #Arq for #backups, but it deserves a post.

it's great. it lets you set targets on local attached (like my screaming fast #thunderbolt #zfs #nvme pool (two mirrored vdevs 💨), USB drives, old disks shoved into a jbod, network shares, #b2, #s3 and s3-compatible object stores (wasabi in my case) and i just love it.

i also use borgbackup and synology HyperBackup and zfs incremental send/rec between pools, but Arq is where hourly snaps of my research and notes happen.

@geffrey just want to second the importance of backup and reliable storage! i need to do an audit of my online/offline and cloud backup stores - i use #Arq for #macOS and backup a couple of workstations with that to local storage, #S3, Wasabi, and #Backblaze #B2 !

on one of my personal workstations my Vaults all live on a zfs dataset and i use snapshots but you can do the same sort of snapshot trickery on APFS filesystems.

and count me in for obsidian mobile eating vaults. thrice.

Summary: Use the Disk Station as a NAS drive (SMB prooved to be rock stable). Use the Linux based functionality for everything else (SFTP for arq backup, Docker for Tools). Literally - NextCloud remains to be the best solution for your data.
Well, the Synology hardware seems pretty decent, too.

@ducksauz maybe i am backing up too much. i do tv/movies media local usb storage and s3 at wasabi or aws. user data goes everywhere. i need to chart this out cuz i also have #arq doing my workstations to local and object stores.

I’ve been chasing down reasons why my #Mac has been running slow for a while now. I think I finally figured it out. #Spotlight has been trying to index my 12T backup drive that #Arq Backup writes too. Too many changes with too many encrypted file blobs. I turned off indexing of that drive in System Preferences and now my Mac is running great again!

At the moment I am using: 1) for my #Macs: #TimeMachine for local backups to two different drives; #Arq to two offsite destinations (#idrive e2 and #backblaze b2); 2) "normal" servers: #restic to both iDrive e2 and Backblaze B2; 3) #kubernetes: #velero and #kasten.
