Bob Naumann, a full timer at #ARRL, is unaware of what QSO Today is, has no idea who @kb6nu is, and thinks #RATPAC *stole #ARRL IP*.
He describes ARRL members that speak up as piranhas.
This is the dude ARRL hired to be in charge of field operations at #arrl.
Can ARRL not find anyone at all in CT that can show any love at all towards amateur radio?
Here's a thought. ARRL staff should stop harassing hams that do stuff and are looking for support and help with publicity.
As a Life Member of #ARRL I was just sent an email with a link to opt in or out of the paper magazine. I wonder how many people will not get, or not utilize, the link and inadvertently get shifted to a digital only magazine.
New to me, a postcard in the mail with a candidate for Great Lakes Division Director of #ARRL .
Looks like this is the announcement of the election
https://www.arrl.org/news/view/candidates-named-for-arrl-director-and-vice-director-elections
"Balloting for contested seats will take place this fall. Votes will be counted"
well that's not a lot of details.
I got my Life Member "opt in to print" email from #ARRL today. Yeah, I opted-in. Call me old-fashioned but a electronic-only magazine is not much more than a blog with a fee.
At 8:28am this morning here in San Diego, the phone rang.
It was Bob Interbitzen from #ARRL, who introduced himself and just started talking. It was very loud and very fast.
I said this is really early and I wasn't actually up yet and that this was a bad time for me to talk.
I was literally still in bed and needed to go the bathroom. I answered the phone because only emergency calls come in before 9am.
He said "Sorry! I guess it is an early hour out there! ha ha ha!" and... dove right in.
@quantensalat @W6KSR @dug Well, sure, given that it's a thing you need to understand when playing with RF! :) I can't imagine the chain of failures needed for that bad an article to make it into print (and OTA can be had in paper form by members if they want it).
Well, until recently at least. #ARRL failed to keep dues current with inflation (even pre-2020) so they are in a world of hurt & trying to blame ... someone ... anyone ...
@abraxas3d I have not looked at the relevant portion of the rules regarding PTC @ 220 MHz (Part 90?) or how the marine stuff is currently written (Part 80) but I don't see us actually being able to do what Part 97 currently says re: 219-220. It's OK - it's not like we made use of it.
But I can't imagine that #ARRL commented on any relevant NPRM because it's not CW & it's not below 30 MHz &, as we all know, that's all that matters to the 06111 crowd. That and making new DXCC countries.
@alexmdunne @abraxas3d @orv Let's hope #ARRL can turn things around. I've learned a lot from QST and their books over the years, and even the most recent QST issue I had to stop paging through because there were some articles I need to stop and READ. (About the Boltzman constant and FreeDV for HF digital voice.)
See, I'm willing to see good, too.
And if they ever make their weekly podcast good again—it was quite good, so recently—someone please tell me.
@alexmdunne @abraxas3d @orv You put it that way, and #ARRL starts to look like they are TRYING to become irrelevant.
I note they never respond when they are tagged here, seem to have no presence here, because they have no idea Mastodon even exists…?
ARRL, always innovating, like it's in their blood, or something. (End disappointed sarcasm.)
@abraxas3d @VE2UWY @kj5amz @M0YNG @kc2ihx @mattgriffin @kz2a @Stormgren @ai6yr @kr1st @JimNo1PC @stripey @bud_t @capheind @jevidl LOL! No wonder I never heard back from them about writing news pieces for them. It's just one thing after another with the #ARRL, isn't it?
So, so sad. For you, though, it's surely the right answer. #ARRL is in their death throes & refuse to understand what is happening. Best not to get involved with their shenanigans. You *may* have local-level ARRL folks who don't reflect the death/decay of 06111 so be sure not to automatically lump them in w/the others.
Just a reminder that the #ARRL dosen't own amateur radio and it's ok to let them die out... 😅
@mattgriffin in the case of #qsotoday ham expo, with a phone call. Bob Interbitzen called Eric Guth to school him on how it was gonna be.
RATPAC's lead, Dan Marler, received a series of aggressively negative emails from David Minster. The latest round of decisioneering at #ARRL is that no one from the League should accept invitations to present at RATPAC, and an email directing some divisions to "not use any RATPAC videos for training".
Specifically singling out RATPAC as competition for LC.
@VE2UWY So...
TAPR DCC is in competition with the learning center. Will they lose their ARRL sponsorship?
ORI is in competition with the learning center. Will we never get another mention in ARRL media?
Hamvention forums? HamCation forums? Pacificon forums?
Oddly, an ARRL Director's organization, *which sells videos*, is the very first link on the Learning Center page.
Those of us that have worked our butts off for #ARRL weren't doing it so the league can help end the conferences we enjoy.
@VE2UWY That's a great question.
A QRZ editor asked ARRL about this development because it is honestly a dumb way for an amateur advocacy group to behave, and got 1) Interbitzen 2) Roderick and 3) Minster doubling and tripling down on the policy in emails.
Minster et al communicated that this was a *final decision* and of course ARRL is in charge of amateur radio in the US and anything viewed as competing with the (paywalled, anemic) Learning Center will *not be promoted or featured by #ARRL*
There's something that's happened recently over at the #arrl, which is the national #hamradio organization for the USA.
ARRL identified, by name, clubs and organizations that produce educational videos as "being in competition with" the ARRL "Learning Center".
ARRL then retaliated against these clubs and organizations, calling them up and stating that these organizations *would be excluded from ARRL publications and partnerships*
Firsthand, #qsotoday and #ratpac are affected.
This is bad.

Funny you mention that photo ... I looked at it and thought "is that real?" I couldn't help but think that this was created from stock images. Not helped by the fact that there is no list of names on the masthead "on the cover" blurb.
Sadly, & I say this as a Life Member for the past 16 years, the ARRL has lost their way whether this image is actually club members or not.
As much as Im angry at #ARRL, I don't plan on making fun of the cover image! (assuming it's real)
#HamTalk Q2. Do you send QSL cards? If so, do you do them on your own, through the bureau, or digitally? Do you require SASE? Why or why not?
A2: First, as a non-radio means of confirming a QSO, paper QSLs are obsolete. Lots of fun, fun to collect, etc, but obsolete. #LOTW is the best modern way of confirming despite the #ARRL's inept operation of same.
That said, I have envelopes on file at the W5 incoming buro & have, in the past, used the outgoing buro.
