7) Smartest RPG you've played

#ArsMagica, by far. I've played 3rd, 4th, and 5th edition, mostly play-by-email, and often steal from it.

@W99 Hear, hear! Ars Magica is among the best for me as well. One of my dream sessions - besides joining a campaign again - is to take out a Forged In The Dark hack of Ars Magica and see if that serves as an introduction for others. #arsmagica #fitd

31. Favorite RPG of all time: In my case, I would guess, it would be Ars Magica. Played it for about 30 years, though I am pausing now, GM fatigue... it is a splendid game, best magic rules of all RPGs, cool setting, tons of campaign ideas and a very modern game since its beginnings 1989 - still modern today. #arsmagica

I'm still hesitant about #Traveller and #PiratesofyDrinax. I don't think I can resist much longer. While many are drawn to the past (that never was) and dark(est) dungeons, I'm drawn to the future and the stars. On the side I make a detour to the "fantastic Middle Ages" of the last (30) #Templars, one of my next #ttrpg books will be:

Best secondhand #rpg purchase

Oh ... I like to buy my books firsthand.

But I actually received the pink D&D box as a second hand gift.

That was neat.

In addition: #ArsMagica 2nd edition is what I bought second hand, at least in parts, because it was out of print.

RPGaDAY2023 Number 15: the more numerate of you will realise I skipped 14! Well, I was going to discuss how I bought a hot dog and added piles of mustard only to discover after biting into it that it was Hot English Mustard and I was once again confronted with the shocking possibility that I am less powerful than I like to imagine.

Anyway, Number 15 is favourite convection one-shot! I have not been to a convention for a long, long time. But, I did win a convention award once, for best teamwork! It was #ArsMagica, a sort of Arthurian type setting with a big rule book that only one of our team had ever delved into (it was his idea to play, Hi M!!). There was a mission and goals and stuff, and as for the 6 of us, when we play, we spell team like “iiiiii”. Reading the character backgrounds, none of the PCs really liked each other? Or they all had existing conflicts. We were so set!! If I recall, we did complete the set tasks, and along the way, somehow, and spontaneously and without planning, the PCs were cooperating and filling in for each others deficiencies with their strengths. We roleplayed a bunch of disparate heroes, each with their own agendas and goals. I guess the GMs were a little bit pleased with how their game worked out. We certainly enjoyed the game, and when they gave us this award, I recalled a few incidents during the game that may have lead to us winning. So, that was my favourite one-shot.

I wonder where that little award is. I wonder if those friends, most (all?) of whom I have drifted apart from, remember that day? If they have those little trophies? If they also feel old enough to reminisce about decades past, those days, when so many different things and people were important, and unimportant, compared to today.

#RPGaDAY2023 Day 12: Oldest game you still play. I haven't played it in a while, but if I was after something detailed and simulationist, then I would probably still turn to #GURPS. (And I don't think of #ArsMagica as old, but Wikipedia tells me the latest edition was 2004, so maybe that counts too.) Less intentionally - when our group plays D&D 5e, I recall a blend of rules from AD&D 1st, 2nd, and 3rd edition along with the new rules...

#RPGaDAY2023 Day 7

The smartest RPG I've played is a difficult question because I have some real doozies in my collection, for example Continuum, but these have never hit the table.

I think the smartest RPG I've actually played is probably Ars Magica. It might seem old hat now, but when it came out the troupe play, use of more than on character per player, and freeform verb-noun magic system were all very innovative at the time.

3. #ArsMagica: We tried it and failed, still on my list....

6. Ich würde unglaublich gerne #ArsMagica spielen, aber rechne nicht damit, dass das jemals klappen wird. Zu komplex, zu involviert - welche Gruppe hat da schon die Zeit für, sich zu committen.

Favourite game you never get to play.

This, for me, is #ArsMagica. I love the setting of mythical Europe, a Europe in the high medieval times with magic and legendary creatures.

It has a fascinating magic system that allows for such creativity. It deals out experience in a campaign based system, which is why I never did a one-shot and never got to play it beyond a test session.

I would love to understand it better though and get to play a small campaign in it.

A long term Ars Magica campaign. #ArsMagica is my perfect setting, since playing a Wizard is my favourite archetype, I enjoy resource management and the way AM deals with fixed effect spells and improvised magic is perfect. I love GMing so troupe style also works brilliantly for me.

You just need four or so like minded people to do it, which is the struggle.

An #introduction... Living in the UK and posting here on #RPG / #TTRPG and maybe other game-related topics.

Played #RPGs since the 1980s, starting with red box D&D. Since enjoyed varieties of #GURPS, #AmberRPG, #MageTheAscension, #Nobilis, #ArsMagica, #FateRPG, #FiascoRPG, and more. Tastes now lean towards narrative and lightweight over simulation and complexity.

Current "to try one day" list includes Powered By The Apocalypse (#PbtA), Forged In The Dark (#FitD) and #GumshoeRPG. One day...

Ever have a game you would love to play in or run and it never seems to work with your group? I have so freaking many.

I have wanted to play in #DeltaGreen and #RedMarkets (rather than run them) for years now. Getting close to just joining a game.

And a long time ago (when we very first established our current gaming group actually) we played a few sessions of #ArsMagica, but that kind of thing appeals to probably ony two people in our group of 5, and a duo game feels like we'd miss out.
