In the late middle ages, artist Cimabue took on a young apprentice called Giotto di Bondone after being impressed with his ability to portray realistic sheep. According to Renaissance historian & artist, Giorgio Vasari, Cimabue went to work on one of his portraits when he noticed a fly on it. He spent a few minutes swatting at it before he realized it was painted on by Giotto as a prank.

In the 1500s, Petrus Gonsalvus, who had hypertrichosis, was believed to be the real life inspiration for the Beauty and the Beast fairytale. He married a young woman named Catherine under the queen Catherine de Medici's orders. While he and his family would be exploited by the nobility, it is believed that he and Catherine did fall in love at some point, as the portrait depicted the then rare gesture of her hand on his shoulder, symbolizing love.

Michaelangelo's Sistine Chapel is considered one of his greatest works, but the nudity was controversial during its time. One such critic was a priest known as Biagio de Cesena (tho some sources say he offended the artist by walking in on the artwork while unfinished). In retaliation, Michaelangelo used his likeness for Greek figure Minos, ass ears and all, as he's tormented in hell.
