Two unexpected cladoceran systergroups--Oligopoda and Magipoda--have shuffled the cladoceran orders according to Van Damme et al (2022). I certainly did not get this topology in my thesis . . . #arthropoda #crustacea #cladocera #phylogeny

I'd like to highlight a niche paper by Hans Pellmann (2021) that documents branchiopod crustacean aktuo-paläontologie--documenting what happens in the modern world BEFORE fossilization. Great to see so many new #arthropod #genome resrouces coming online from LOEWE_TBG's project MetaInvert (https://www.researchsquare.com/article/rs-2706746/v1) e.g. for springtails 55 species with assessed assemblies at A3Cat (https://rmwaterhouse.org/a3cat), and soon 77 more!

A new paper on the internal anatomy of a Devonian specimen of Concavicaris woodfordi is out with @Ellivalcaris
The specimen is externally unremarkable, but displays patterns of differential mineralization that are consistent with the preservation of internal tissues. #Palaeontology #paleontology #fossil #arthropoda #crustacea #thylacocephala #oklahoma #devonian #ctscan

Weird taxonomic observation today. I was going through a Russian paleontological atlas from 1949, and I found several phyllocarid taxa that I had never heard of before. I cannot find the work they refer to (of course, it is not cited in the atlas). Later work on fossil phyllocarids seems to almost ignore this author. Did the authors that ignored him know something I don't? Confusing things even more is that there are over four ways to transliterate his name. . . #arthropoda

"Some New Discoveries About the Groups of Palaeoecological Geography in Xinjiang and the study of them" [新疆古生态地理群的新发现及其研究] just keeps getting weirder and weirder the more I look at it. Here is the translation of the table of arthropods from the locality. Despite the minor blips from Google Translate, what the hell is a "Faucet Claw Shrimp"? Let me tell you, the fossil pictures do not help. #arthropoda #paleontology #palaeontology #fossil #crustacea

I asked ChatGPT to tell me about Thylacocephalans as a little test. I learned something new: it told me that their common name is "sabre-headed" or "sabre-toothed" lobsters. I have never heard this common name before, nor could I find a reference to it on the interwebs. A confident fabrication!
@Ellivalcaris what do you think of that?

New paper out by Nicolini et al in Frontiers in Ecology and Evolution (open access!). It looks at the genomics of Hox and ParaHox genes. The thing that grabs me about this diagram is the missing genes in spinicaudatan clam shrimp, and their duplication event. The other thing that grabs me is that there is nothing obviously funny about notostracan Hox genes, despite their weird disjunct between segment number and appendage number. #arthropoda #crustacea #evolution

Czech paleontologist Antonín Fritsch (Frič) wrote a series of monographs and papers that dealt with the fossils of Bohemia (mostly Paleozoic). Amongst those, was the mention of some clam shrimp with preserved appendages (identified as Estheria triangularis Fritsch 1901 and E. calcarea Fritsch, 1901). To my knowledge, no one has ever followed up this instance of soft-part preservation. #arthropoda #fossil #crustacea #paleontology #palaeontology

Manja Hethke et al. have an important new contribution which I think will cause us to rethink how we approach fossil clam shrimp taxonomy. But, aside from that, the paper is notable for this picture, which shows how an arthropod, which adds growthlines like a mollusc, adds new exoskeleton to its carapace. This is called 'incomplete molting.' Turns out that they DO NOT grow a completely new carapace under the old one--just a new bit at the edge. #arthropoda #paleontology
Taxonomists: I just asked ChatGPT to write a systematic description of the trilobite Flexicalymene meeki. It failed.

New 'in press' trilobite paper by Peng et al. in the journal Palaeoworld about a new Cambrian dameselloid trilobite--and casts some doubt on the supposed relationship between dameselloids and the later odontopleurids. The trident of Walliserops is rigid, fixed to the head. Even if it did spear a tasty morsel on it, there is no way it could have gotten it to its mouth. Cue sad trilobite noises. Maybe Walliserops made s'mores for its friends? I think there are some #paleoart opportunities here. #trilobita #arthropoda #TrilobiteTuesday #paleontology #palaeontology #fossil #evolution

Happy #PhyllocaridFriday !
Today's phyllocarid is Oryctocaris balssi (Broili, 1930). The picture is from a paper by Bergmann & Rust (2014). This crustacean is from the Devonian Hunsrück Slate in Germany. At this site, fossils were replaced with the mineral pyrite before they could significantly decay--preserving detail unusual for fossils. Presumably, this O. balssi is related to modern Leptostracans--but it is much larger and more heavily armored. #arthropoda #crustacea #paleontology #fossil
