In the late middle ages, artist Cimabue took on a young apprentice called Giotto di Bondone after being impressed with his ability to portray realistic sheep. According to Renaissance historian & artist, Giorgio Vasari, Cimabue went to work on one of his portraits when he noticed a fly on it. He spent a few minutes swatting at it before he realized it was painted on by Giotto as a prank.
