I've always loved the idea that she got dressed up like that to paint. I do hope she really did.

Adélaïde Labille-Guiard🇫🇷(1749-1803) deserves a top spot amongst GOAT #C18th artists. A sublime portraitist, she was also the first woman allowed to have a teaching studio at the Louvre. Many of her students (like the two pictured) were women.

Like y’day’s Turner, Eugène Delacroix🇫🇷(1798-1863) also bridged the old and the new. He’s considered the last of the Old Masters, yet his work appears almost modern. Dynamic, moody paintings w/exotic flavour are signature, influenced by Byron.

Balthasar Denner🇩🇪(1685-1749) studied the Dutch tradition (think Rembrandt) of the C17th, but added a hyper-realism to his portraits which was much admired, particularly his skill in depicting the texture of skin. Zoom in!

The🇩🇪portriatist Joseph Karl Stieler (1781-1858) is famous for beautifying already beautiful sitters & for *that* portrait of Beethoven. Recognize him by oh-so-crisp lines, glowing skin, insanely detailed fabric/jewellery, & gorgeous plaits/curls.

*The* Neoclassical GOAT,🇫🇷Jacques-Louis David (1748-1825) escaped a head chop with bestie Robespierre & lived to pander to Napoleon. Signature David: clean lines; exquisite realism; hating the Ancein Régime (sketch is Marie-A going to guillotine).
