Old Dreams

I dreamed forever of a house,
— all sandstone and plate glass —
Built upon a rocky shore,
Where pelicans with tactical precision skimmed waves.

But this landlocked garden is my soul’s true home —
An oleander fortress with bluejays here, squirrels there,
And where relentless, hungry dragonflies give chase.

Sparrows’ chirps and rustling breeze
Through dense, protective blooming leaves
— The only sounds to stir my solitude.

I rarely long for salt-tanged air.
This home, this shaded garden dare,
To sing my prayers and endless gratitude.

Star Wars illustrations by a young child, for their adult friend Colin, a 50 year old Star Wars fan who was dying of cancer. They remain on Colin’s bedroom door, after the became one with the Force back in January.
