art is so cool, art history is super interesting, did yall know Picasso was super racist? pply not but its not suprising, he took his cubism from african culture and then claimed he created it
there are so many different types of art that at this point i see everything and everyone as a work of art that nature herself painted, go into a forest during the fall at like sunset or something you cant tell me thats not a work of art

Art lab experiments turned tissue paper into what looks like geological records. Details on my site: https://www.lizruest.com/2023/painting-tissue-paper/

I posted this collaboration from the Paris Collage Collective challenge on IG yesterday: a photo by Susan Wilkinson on Unsplash became a couple more layers on this altered workshop sketch. And I love it!
Well, now what?? I would call this done, except that it's not all my work. But all this photo asks for is credit? How do you handle this in work you call your own?

Another square completed from the studio collage fodder, and 11 more in an assembly line. Does that make it less like art?
As I think about the origins of these wonderful paper scraps, deciding which belong together, where I need contrast -- scratch that, it's art all right!
These rectangle sketches have exhausted my home collage fodder -- that's good! Maybe I should check the studio aka extended art storage? OMG. SO much left to work through! This is the tip of the iceberg, I tell you...
I'm so fond of many of these pieces! But maybe with this pass, I can bring myself to throw out the smallest bits. How do you edit your supplies?

Am I a sucker for glue that smells like almonds? AND it's non-toxic? Oh my. https://twohandspaperie.com/products/coccoina-glue-stick-10-gram

Good stuff here. Like I'm not asking this ALL the time! https://hyperallergic.com/711949/art-problems-is-my-art-good-enough/
Or not -- it brings to mind the art writeup that elaborates on how many hours went into it, which makes it better somehow. Sometimes, art flows out; other times we make crap for days in a row. After years of this, every piece of art took the sum of those years to make. #ArtTalk
I'm trying out a great way to start my art day: improvisational drawing from Jane Davies: https://janedaviesstudios.wordpress.com/2023/03/16/improvisational-drawing/.
Just scribbles, then turn the page. Love it!

Test hang of the first 6 pieces for my new project. I see some potential here, and might try overlapping the white space at the bottom. #MastoArt #ArtTalk #InTheStudio

Project update, on my blog: https://www.lizruest.com/2023/so-many-projects/
I haven't got much of a record of what I did over the week. On the one hand, it feels good not to be thinking about documenting every damn thing. On the other hand -- nothing was worth even a snapshot? Was I just going through the motions?
Okay, here's one: the collage-on-aluminum piece met some copper paint. An interesting nod to the shine of the original surface, maybe. Applied by hand, whoo-eee, bright! On my fingers too. :)

I have a theory that drawing is one of the "easiest" hobbies to enjoy because it has a built in workflow where conscious creative choices are spaced out between periods of relaxing and applying skills less consciously. E.g. sketch (creative), lineart (just following your sketch), colours (creative), shading (just following rules of how light behaves)...
I'm gonna ponder this:

Feels like I should update my RedBubble site, but not sure these florals make my cut. Better than they were, but am I just doing this to check off a list item?

Here's a boost I needed. Building confidence for those days when my art looks crappy to me. Thoughts from an artist I admire, Jacqueline Calladine: https://privateview.substack.com/p/balancing-on-the-thin-line-between
Time for the "What doesn't belong" game. When I showed this set of hopeful minimal compositions to a few artists, one blurted out the problem: the piece I thought HAD to be there was the problem child. Aha!! Is this what people mean by "kill your darlings"? I might finally understand... #ArtTalk #ArtSeries #WorkInProgress #MinimalArt

I got out to see some art this week! It had me thinking... so I wrote up my thoughts, here: https://www.lizruest.com/2023/ideas-of-home/
The show: Ideas of Home, at the North Seattle Community College art gallery, through March 3rd.
I enjoy watching people create, especially when they're explaining their process as they go. Judy Woods has great videos for her abstract, layered work, here: https://www.judywoodsart.work/blog/
I find it difficult to explain my process, so I appreciate good curriculum where I can find it. Got any other examples?
I'll be painting live in 10 minutes (7 pm EST): https://www.twitch.tv/gwennseemel
