I was recently asked, "is it easier for you to draw something from a photograph, rather than the physical object? Is that why you are taking reference photos?"

The answer is twofold, I don't have a lot table space in my studio to have a still life set up near me. Plus, there's also the issue of my furry studio assistant who would gladly run off with a feather first chance she gets. 🖤

I was asked recently if it's difficult selling my originals and letting them go. I can remember a time when I couldn't imagine letting them go. But now it feels like the final stage of the creative process.

Every original that doesn't sell is just sleeping and waiting or it serves to inspire me forward.

Update on the drawing backgrounds question:
I think I'll spend a few practice sessions on doing photostudies of bedrooms.
Why bedrooms? If it is not a hotel-like bedroom, I'll have all sorts of shadowplay on the blankets and cussions. So lots of practice on soft and hard shadows that are usefull for different objects.
I already did 3 today, might share them sooner or later. But finding stock photos of such bedrooms is difficult.

I've been learning to use blender for about a year now but more seriously in the last few months and I'm really excited that I was able to knock this out in about 20 minutes. One of the original reasons I wanted to learn was so I could make 3d mockups of my washi tape for promotional images because taking product photos is such a pain, especially for having to do macro shots of things with low print resolution/obvious grain in the print. I think I first tried to do the above image back in January and kept bouncing hard against blender's unintuitive hotkeys and environment - even just adjusting camera clipping distance was a problem since I'm working true to life scale on this and the default camera can't work this small.

Yes, this model is pretty chonky and the mapping is wrong - I'd like to get the uv mapping to tile along the tape length (infinitely if possible) and I need to work out a material that looks like the tape does on the top side, and ideally turn this into a smart object I can use in Photoshop and swap in the art and labels of my other designs. I've seen existing mockups for tape that were marketed as washi tape while being duct tape/packing tape dimensions and glossiness, so I have to fill this gap myself.

This stuff was so intimidating to me a year ago but look at me now :) Anyways, this tape is available in my shop if you're interested
