So, along side starting to show my drawing process, I figured I should show some of the tools I use as well. Best part, they are all free and can be accessed on your browser!

referenceangle.com/
A rotatable 3d model of a head. Move it to an angle you are trying to draw, and it will find irl photos closely matching the angle you set! And there are options for gender, age, and a few expression options!

x6ud.github.io/#/
Similar to the last site, but for animals! Several 3d renders of animal skulls to rotate around, then finds pictures of a variety of species matching closely to the angle you set!

reference.sketchdaily.net/en
A good site for practicing! Randomly chooses references for you to practice drawing! You can set it to a classroom style, where the references cycle out at set timed-intervals, or manually! 5 categories to choose from, all with various options: Full Body, Body Part (Hands, Feet, Head), Animals, Structures, and Vegetation.

posemaniacs.com/
Daily poses with focus on muscle anatomy! 3D male and female models that you can rotate around. Even has a searchable catalog of previous poses. Also has light settings for the models!

roomstyler.com/3dplanner
Build a 3D room, or use an existing pre-built one. You can move a camera around the room to visualize how your background might look from a certain point of view! Great for me, as I'm horrible of visualizing backgrounds, lol!

Urban sketching is all about sketching on location. The location is up to you.

Pre-pandemic, I sketched in cafes a lot. Some people sketch on public transport, from inside their car, or at home. Anywhere is fine, so long as you're drawing from life.

If it's too hot to sketch outside, try and find a shady spot early or late in the day. Remember sunscreen, a hat, and always stay hydrated.

See my Instagram (link in bio) for more examples.

In my experience, many artists base their characters on their own features, or reference.

That means a lot of time they are either looking in the mirror, taking selfies or working from sets of reference photos.

if you're talking about anatomy, then lots of life drawing practice, char reference sketches and reference pose photos also work.

Does that help?

Genuine I have, since I'm a complete with making and only just know practicing my for my comics, HOW DO YOU STAY ON MODEL???
Is it that you all practiced drawing your characters til it just became muscle memory, or are you using shortcuts, or is there a rodent under your hat controlling you and doing all the work?

Y'all how do you deal with wanting to learn so many things at once you get frustrated and learn nothing. I want to practice anatomy, backgrounds, and clothes since these are the things that hold me back the most but I can't focus on one at a tiem cause i want to improve all 3 but then i get overwhelmed and do none isntead.

So I've been posting various composition related videos over the years. I think the final series will be 12 episodes, and I'll be posting Ep 10 tomorrow. In the meantime, feel free to check out the currently posted episodes if so inclined: youtube.com/playlist?list=PLVb

I found an absolutely massive balloon library available in the Clip Studio asset store!

It's paid, but the quality is well worth it.

All 52 kinds of balloons! Total 200 pieces!:

another trick i learned recently is using a color adjustment filter set to alpha.
it adds more weight variation to lineart. the effect is a little subtle here, but ive increased the overall thickness of the lines, then masked out the areas in white where i want the lines to remain a bit thinner. theres also a blur filter to resolve any pixelation

Remember: when you flip your canvas you flip your OC's alignment. Don't forget to flip it back when you're done.

What’s this? 👀

Long story short, I’ve uploaded a .PDF that’s been lurking on my website for a while to 📝

It goes over some info I wish I’d known sooner when I got into 🖍️

Not super robust, but I think it could be helpful if you’re new to the medium & really want to better understand what makes alcohol markers unique.

If that sounds interesting to you, this “Crash Course” is available for Free/PWYW here: ko-fi.com/s/39be98b8f1

Hey comic artists! Do you:

✅ Have a tight deadline
✅ Have a ton of scenes set in towns/villages
✅ Struggle with perspective for buildings?

Here's a time-saving hack I like to call, "slap a tree (or bush) over it!"

Using too many trees already? Slap an NPC over it instead!

Stylization process.
IMO an art style is richest and most comprehensive when it ISNT your inherent way of drawing. Its more like a filter dictated by specific choices you apply over a developed understanding of real shapes and mass.

That is to say: I try not to sketch within my art style. I do a first sketch more within photorealism as to better comprehend my reference point, and then progressively push the style on a second/third/etc redraw.

:blobfoxwink: Small pencil drawing trick to get deeper shadows. Besides the pencil you'll need a white gel pen or similar.

When the paper can't take it anymore or you need to push the graphite down a value you can apply a white ink layer, remove the excess, let it dry then draw over it. It'll be a colder hue, but it soaks up the graphite very well with minimal force.

I'm not entirely sure how it holds up on the long run, but two months in it seems good so far!

I found this interesting.
animationobsessive.substack.co

It's a link with information that Hayao Miyazaki gave on how to paint like him. It has some drawings, tips, and also goes into what watercolors he uses (Holbein) and why (reasonably priced and a little goes a long way), and how to avoid making a muddy mess, all presented in English.
