Finished Babel Tower by AS Byatt, the third of a quartet of novels charting the lives of the same characters through several decades. Now need to find a second hand paperback of A Whistling Woman for the sake of bookshelf completeness.
A larger, more formally ambitious book than the predecessors, you can tell that Possession came in between.

Love is a gift. It's a gift of oneself given freely. It's not something one can ever ask for.

Love is not something we come to by reason. It’s more like a vapour, a dream perhaps, to lure us into the enchantment of our own stories. If not so, how are we to ever to know if it’s ever real? Is it a truth or simply a madness?
