Been trying to explain to this dude on Reddit that yes in fact #Amazon *does* have a strong incentive to support the new #ASCON lightweight encryption protocols selected by #NIST in its #sidewalk #meshnetwork for #IoT devices. Because they may or may not care about providing secure IoT gizmos to the likes of you and me, but they *do* care about selling IoT services to #federal #government agencies. 1/?

@campuscodi The need for these confuses me because in 2023 I have a hard time imagining that fitting AES and SHA2 into connection capable microcontrollers on a power budget is difficult. What is my imagination missing?

Digging into the NIST LWC winner (Ascon), and it's really cool! Even in reduced-round scenarios it requires a large number of nonce reuses/misuses to recover state or forge an invalid tag, and doesn't necessarily even result in key recovery dif you do. Worlds better than AES-GCM... though that's not saying much.
