There are a whole host of modern reading traditions of Biblical #Hebrew, from #Ashkenazi, to #Sephardi, and #Yemenite. Despite the rich diversity of traditions of #Biblical Hebrew at our fingertips, the #linguistic relationship between them has never been mapped out. In this book the phyla-and-waves methodology, which has been used for Semitic language classification, is used to map out the relationship between the main reading traditions of Biblical Hebrew throughout history.

A much more sweeping theory posited a #Khazar origin for the core #Ashkenazi population as a whole. A century ago, it was at least plausible to the extent that, like Ptolemaic astronomy, it accounted for appearances. However, modern #genetics and #history alike have rejected this view, which is today essentially the province of cranks & #antisemites.

I agree that there is a lot of shared history.

However, I assumed that you meant that you were both #Black and #Jewish. My mistake!

Anyway, there are many communities of #JewsOfColor. So often, those of us in the #NorthAmerican #Ashkenazi communities tacitly (and mistakenly) assume that "Jewish" means "North American Ashkenazi." Not so.

I wanna make lox for a group of Jewish lesbians using my bubbe's recipe so we can fight about whose bubbe has the best recipe (it's mine btw)

My mother’s family are #Ashkenazi from #Poland but were non-practicing. So, I’m not extremely religious. I tend toward #Reconstructionist and #Reform expressions with a healthy dose of #Humanism mixed in for good measure. I used to teach #theology and #philosophy, so I’m great at esoteric trivia parties.

Apparently, yes - and upon learning these details, one could ask why this idea isn't discussed in #Ashkenazi #Orthodox #yeshivas

Until the #EarlyModern era, the #MiddleEast & #NorthAfrica were home to the largest #Jewish #population, after which Europe surpassed them. For that reason & due to #immigration patterns, this #Ashkenazi culture is dominant in USA.

There is, however, unity in diversity. The C12 #Hanukkah poem Ma'oz Tzur is used in both Askhenazi & #Sephardi / #Mizrachi traditions, but the melodies are refreshingly different:
