This is dried shrimp rice noodles, with Vietnamese pork sausage. Our homegrown cucumbers & Thai mint were added. Nuoc cham sauce poured over it all. I add chili paste atop & mix it all up before eating it all.

My evening movie watching snacks are more leftover dim sum from yesterday. These are baked bean curd rolls - stuffed with prawn & lobster with Chinese chives. I drizzled lots of sriracha hot sauce atop.

The dim sum is from Jade Fountain Restaurant - located on the lower level of the Red Lion Inn on border of #VictoriaBC & #Saanich on Douglas.

Chinese Style Orange-Sesame Sauce, coating deep fried cauliflower

I must play around with this sauce again. It is quite rich and dark in flavour – a current obsession of mine in the kitchen. Wintery flavours.

This sauce is orangey with the depth of soy and a hint of sesame. It has sweet overtones. It goes well with anything deep fried – tofu, cauliflower, pakoda – or grilled items – eggplant slices for example – or roasted or stirfried veg – broccoli, cauliflower etc.

It would be fabulous for all sorts of Indo-Chinese dishes too. Think deep fried Manchurian veggie balls.

Or it can be used as a coating sauce, dipping sauce (although it is quite thick) or spread the sauce on a plate and place ingredients on top of the sauce. I love roasted slices of eggplant and deep fried tofu that way, scattered with tons of spring onions.

The sauce is made with garlic, spring onions (scallions), sesame seeds, Chinese toasted sesame oil, fresh orange juice, sweet soy, and vinegar, and is thickened with cornflour.

Ep. 1 features Nasi Lemak Ayam Taliwang (the name of both the hawker stall and the dish it specializes in). I had the chance to try their branch on Bras Basah Rd. a few months back. And though the dish is so spicy, I couldn't stop stuffing a mouthful in between gulps of calamansi juice. It's *that* good!

HMart is up & coming but still hasn't established a sufficient presence, especially in the SFBA, to challenge 99Ranch.

I never walked into a 99Ranch until I moved to the East Bay and I like that almost anything I want is available there, the 2 closest to me (in Concord & Pleasanton) are still far enough away that I don't drive there unless absolutely necessary.

Fortunately, there's a place called the "Country Market" in Antioch that's closer to me that I can visit but, if I really miss the sight/sounds/feel of "Chinatown," I'll trek down to Oakland to get what I need.
