#AskATP 20 years ago (and one day) DTrace was born (http://dtrace.org/resources/bmc/houston.txt). Apple incorporated it into macOS (and subsequent OS platforms) starting with MacOS X 10.5 Leopard in 2007 (http://preserve.mactech.com/articles/mactech/Vol.23/23.11/ExploringLeopardwithDTrace). It was incorporated into Instruments (https://knowledge.broadcom.com/external/article/180011/how-to-use-macintosh-xcodes-instruments.html) and hailed as a revolution for system monitoring and profiling.

@atpfm on this past weeks show @marcoarment was talking about his iPhone’s screen getting scratched (with @siracusa disagreeing and calling out how likely it is Marco has sand in his pockets 😂).
Do you guys not use screen protectors? Along those lines, do you use a case? #askatp
@atpfm RAID/Ubiqitui NVR question ... setting up my new NVR with four drives I have leftover from previously updating my Synology disks. Went with RAID 10, and in the settings I noticed two drives have ~23,000 hr and the other two have ~31,000 hr. Is there any advantage to putting the drives with similar hours in the same mirroring pair, or should I split them up so each pair has a low and high hour drive? #askatp
#askatp Does anyone else run into this error? What even is this error? I feel like this is pretty common and I can’t figure a way to fix this. Even Safari reader mode will crash when selected. So infuriating. Anyone?
@caseyliss #askatp Casey I’d love to know if you’ve considered how you’ll combat people deleting the app and reinstalling it to get more credits in Callsheet, instead of purchasing.
I have an iOS app that also doesn’t use authentication, but am finding quite a few users will just delete and reinstall the app to get around the paywall.
Any way to combat this that doesn’t involve authentication/accounts?
@atpfm Would love to hear your thoughts on Steve’s perspective on only offering a monthly subscription due to what happened to Tweetbot/Twitterrific/Apollo and having to offer refunds due to unfulfilled annual subs: https://mastodon.social/@stroughtonsmith/110896098434580150 #AskATP
@atpfm @caseyliss #askatp @marcoarment @siracusa Have any of you guys tried #ArcBrowser by The Browser Company? After using it for a couple month it puts safari to shame. I would be curious on what you guys thin about it.
Here’s a link to download Arc, the
browser I was telling you about!
@atpfm In legacy Time Machine, when switching to a larger drive it was possible to preserve backup history (by copying the `Backup.backupsdb` folder from the old drive to the new drive). Is something like this possible with modern, APFS-based Time Machine?
I couldn't find anything on how to do this. https://shirt-pocket.com/forums/showthread.php?t=3565 implies it's not possible. And duplicating the old drive to the new drive with SuperDuper! did work, but Time Machine wouldn't recognize the old backups.
#askatp going a few weeks back to your discussion about multi-monitor limits on Apple Silicon.
Do you know why using an iPad as an external display doesn’t count towards the monitor limit?
I use a 2018 iPad Pro as a third display these days, it’s a solid experience, but I’m perplexed why an iPad is required when this demonstrates the cpu/gpu can handle at least one more monitor than officially supported.
@atpfm @siracusa @marcoarment @caseyliss #AskATP Loved your conversation on usage of SwiftUI, UIKit, AppKit!
I'm considering making a cross-platform SwiftUI app. (Partly to learn dev on Apple platforms, partly because I have a specific itch I want to scratch.)
On the Mac side, should I use SwiftUI on Catalyst or SwiftUI on Mac proper? I've heard both have their share of issues.
@atpfm @siracusa @marcoarment @caseyliss #askatp John's recent backup section convinced me to use time machine again for my mac. My question is how much should the backup drive's size be in relation to the Mac's SSD? (or in relation to used size of the SSD). I'm currently at 2x SSD size (but about 4x actually used size).
Do you all use iCloud Private Relay? I've noticed that if I have it enabled in Safari settings for “from Trackers and Websites” instead of just “from Trackers”, my download speeds (on speedtest.net) drop from over 800MBs to less than 300MBs. That's a pretty significant drop.

@caseyliss this is what my home charging station looks like. Is this normal? #AskATP
