Are you ADHD?

Who do you discuss your plans, hopes, dreams and goals with?

Planning, thinking about the future, and considering what has to happen for your desired outcomes to obtain...that all falls under EXECUTIVE FUNCTIONING.

Do you ever want to be or do or have something and that wish is strong, and clear and compelling...but then the thing doesn't really happen? Even though you truly want it on a level?

To get to where you want to go, it helps to articulate what you desire and also keep checking in with your goals and how you plan to get there.

With ADHD, we may not be motivated to do this or executive function issues can get in the way.

If you'd like to set intentions and actually follow through, you would do well to externalise the process.

That means taking the dreams out of your head and putting them somewhere else, and in a form that helps success to happen.

You can talk to yourself.
You can talk to an animal.
You can dictate your ideas.
You can journal your ideas.
You can work with a buddy.
You can work with a therapist.
You can work with a coach.

It doesn't matter if it's written or spoken or who it's with...but it has to come out of your head if it's actually going to happen.

That's what I've seen with myself and with clients

Coaching is a fantastic executive function support. Having a coach is like a second brain bringing your desires to fruition.

If you'd like to work with.me, let me know. You can also visit thequirkybrain.coach...but parts are under construction.

I'm working on a project to see if we can make our office space (even) more inclusive for different neurotypes.

**Fellow neurodiverse people, what helps you thrive in an office environment?**

(Yes, working from home is already an option)

Subject: Terminology for ADHD

:)

What terminology do you use when telling people about your ADHD?

e.g. do you say, 'I've got ADHD' or 'I'm an ADHDer' or - hmm..... I think I should probably stop now and let you answer this.... 🤨😁

Thanks and for reboosts.

I'm not aware of scientific work on this but it's my own experience that too much and working too hard makes me vulnerable to infections.

I had a cold and had two important work deliverables to do. I was the only person who could do them, and I didn't want to disappoint. I also only thought I had a cold. I tested negative for COVID loads of days in a row, too...and thought I was feeling a little better.

However, I had to mask a lot and really force myself to work hard and concentrate - under deadlines too.

As soon as I began to relax for the first time in over a week yesterday: a huge fever developed.

I'm not after any sympathy. I'm cuddling my animals, who maintain a constant vigil.

I am curious to know how common this experience is for anyone masking conditions, however. I'd also love to know if there is any scientific literature on this phenomenon for a range of brains.

Does this happen to you and why do you think it happens?

Lots of us watch videos or listen to podcasts at 2x speed, right? This seems to be a pretty well known thing. Less than 1.75 just always seems too slow for me.

But this is only true when someone is speaking normally. If someone is reading from a script, it sounds completely unnatural to me, and I can't process it all, even at normal speed, unless I concentrate exceptionally hard.

Someone suggested that maybe it's that the average person isn't very good at reading aloud, but I don't think it's that. Even top-rated audiobooks are also entirely impossible to listen to.

Doe anyone else relate to any of this, or have any pointers to anything where I could learn more? I've read some stuff on , but most of that doesn't apply to me, and I'm struggling to find anything else related.

One clue seems to be that stand-up comedy seems to work, even though that's mostly scripted. I don't really know what the difference is, but my guess would be that they work hard at making it sound natural, whereas most people reading speak in a different manner. But I don't have the vocabulary for describing any of this, so don't know how to google for more.

I have to make a living but it's very important to me that I do give something to my community free of charge.

I already share a lot of tips and self-coaching resources on social media for autistic, ADHD and AuDHD folks...

However, when my circumstances change next year, I'll have time and bandwidth for something further.

I am thinking about doing a monthly webinar that looks into a topic related to our conditions, and suggests safe, inclusive and low/no cost things that people can change or coach themselves on in regards to that topic.

This would be affirmative and not taking the medical model or deficit perspective! (So although I like to help people grow authentically and autonomously, there's nothing about us that needs to be fixed!)

Is this something you might be tempted to attend or watch on catch-up?

And, if so, what topics would you want self-coaching and self-care webinars on?

I am based in the UK.

I have noticed that my energy levels and focused have decreased since the clocks changed.

I have been reading a couple of studies. It seems that sunlight and vitamin D levels play a role in production of neurotransmitters such as dopamine.

As we know, dopamine systems are implicated in the executive dysfunction often experienced with ADHD.

I am using my SAD lamp more often. These have come down massively in price, and a good one can be had for under £25 now.

I have also started supplementing with strong vitamin D tablets to see if this will help.

Obviously, anything to do with light and supplements is a personal decision that should be considered carefully and safely but you may find it helpful to talk to your health professional about how you might support your cognitive function in these darker winter months.

I have also found that doubling down on self-care for the last 10 days has given me a bit of a boost.

How are you all feeling?

Any anyone can give me to help with my burnout? I've still got around a month left of classes... I do take medication for ADHD, but my medication isn't helpful in cases like this.

I'm enjoying my re-read of BJ Fogg's "Tiny Habits" on Audible.

Changing to reading with Audible has really helped me to keep reading, especially when busy or when executive functioning has dropped.

I want to share ONE TIP from the book that I was reminded of today.

If you want to start a new behaviour or habit, tie it to something you already do...

Preferably something fairly embedded and automatic...

It sounds weird but I like to tie new habits to things like eating, showering or going to the toilet as...

...I'm going to do them anyway at some point!

It could be something like

- Every time I take a shower, I will do 30 seconds of deep breathing

- Every time I go to the toilet, I'll do 3 wall press ups

- Every time I take a bath, I'll learn something with Audible

- Every time I eat breakfast, I'll take my multivitamin

Don't expect it to work right away. Expect to forget several times. Expect it to take at least a week or two to really work...

But tie new habits to existing ones and the chance of it working well and quickly goes up MASSIVELY.

Have a great day, one and all!
