Was reading the #Intel 8080 Programmer's Manual (I've been looking at #Assembly lately, for some reason) and it says "Writing programs in assembly language is the first and most significant step towards economical programming." I think they need to add some emphasis on the first....

I never wrote Assembly in my life, but tonight (for some reason) I thought of disassembling simple C code snippets with Ghidra. So, I started with a hello world and was very surprised to find a much more extensive and complex result compared to my original assembly (obtained with GCC).

I mean, it's a Hello World!

BTW does anyone here have a good name for the S/360 kind of assembly/instruction relationship where every instruction is always encoded in the same number of bytes, in a fixed format implicit in the op code? And every different op code relates to a different #asm mnemonic?

No monkeying about with a variable number of modifiers, x86-style, in other words.

e.g. OC (or characters) for a length of 0x50
might be encoded
D6 50 A123 B789
Op.Len addr1, addr2

@randrews Well, I'd love to reverse engineer games but my skills just are NOT where they need to be to make that happen. So, Part of this is skill building on my part mixed with a desire document stuff for posterity.

Let's see… the SpeedScript word processor for the C64, because it's so iconic. Newsroom, because of this fantastic article here: https://hackaday.com/2023/03/22/commodore-64-reports-the-news/ and anything else that can help me level up my minimal #asm skills so I can actually reverse engineer, document, and port games.

@njvack @autumn I was just looking at Radare2 disassembly of that games to see how difficult it would be to reverse engineer the it and write a modern counterpart. My Intel #asm is not that strong, unfortunately.

Other #FOSS versions exist, but they're either 3D (not my thing) or they're unmaintained and #Wayland transition will break them.

Getting there - stability and features are slowly improving. Still a way to go, but it's getting more fun as we get more working. Here's some other screen shots showing different colours, and that my patches to the #AgonLight VDP for ADDS25 terminal support now get inverse text, clear screen and cursor control to work. I also had to work around to force screen width to 80 character.
