Been having a lot of conversations at my school lately about the trends in our standardized test data. I worry that when the numbers dip, we begin focusing on the wrong outcomes. I think our Science instruction is doing a great job teaching kids to love Science and to understand how it works. But the test measures whether they recall the specific details of dozens of lessons. It feels like Goodhart's Law at it's worst.

How might “None of the above” response options impact test performance?
(1) It didn’t seem to impact performance or confidence on individual items.
(2) However, the NOTA option did seem to reduce overall confidence.
(3) Also, students preferred choices without a NOTA option (68%). Few preferred the NOTA option (12%).

One of the things I've taken to trying with particularly stubborn students is to make a bellringer into the exit ticket as well.

The way it works is to choose about 3-5 questions for them to work on at the start of class, usually make one that they should be able to get from previous lessons but the rest should be tailored to the concept in the lesson you are about to teach.

The key is to let them know they will be graded on it, but that you will not collect it till the end of the lesson.

The benefit to this is that students get a "preview" of the material, they know to pay attention, and it helps them to formulate questions and be more likely to actually ask them as the lesson goes on.

Not saying it's the best method, if such a thing exists, but it is a little strategy that has worked for me.

I was unimpressed by this until I compared it to conventional college course evaluation.

Putting 20 dietitians through a series of reflection trainings (with control phases) over 20 weeks increased their (self-rated?) indicators of reflective practice: doi.org/10.1111/ijtd.12306

If that sounds trivial:
1. Would the typical college course improve its self-assessed outcomes that much?
2. Do typical course evaluations employ multi-baseline cross-over designs like this?

this is the province where I went to school through BA level, and my child through 12th grade. Unfortunately conventional grading remains in place for 11th grade through university. I can’t wait till it is gone entirely. It is a system that tells students very little about what they can do and know, let alone about what they need to know how to do or how to get there. thetyee.ca/Analysis/2023/08/07 1/2

This article argues that "a simplistic reinterpretation of DORA" (but not DORA itself) is guilty of "bibliometric denialism".

A reminder! APAR approaching...

From the 1 August 2023, when an organisation receives recognition for a standard from Ofqual or the Office for Students (OfS) they will automatically be placed onto the list of approved EPAOs. DfE will merge this list with the Register of Apprenticeship Training providers (ROATP) and rename it the ‘apprenticeship providers and assessment register’ (APAR).

TITLE: Blog post on racism and risk assessment

-------- Forwarded Message --------

Hi folks:

It’s probably of interest only to a few on this list, but since I was
posting it elsewhere...

This week's /Sexual Abuse/ blog is on racism and risk assessment.
Obviously, no single blog post can cover everything on this topic, but I
did what I could.
