The assumption that Asterisk would only log a valid originating IP address is is poor. On an older system, it really did log a CIDR notation of 198.x.x.0/2 and other code created an iptables drop rule for that block. It won't any more. I have a honeypot set to capture full packets. I used to use #Asterisk chan_dongle to get a voice channel with 3G USB stick tied to a cellular number. This worked but you couldn't use the 3G stick for data at the same time.

Is VoLTE just SIP over the same data channel? Or is it over a different "channel". I'm trying to work out if I could get both a backup data connection and a phone number working at the same time?

These #Yealink #VOIP phones are less of a bear to configure (including setting correct tones for Britain and the date/timezone/NTP) than the Ciscos I was dealing with a decade ago!

Tip: Turn off #CNG (comfort noise generator) on each telephone set if you are linking a hosted VOIP system (some customised #Asterisk build) to an IVR on another #Asterisk on-premises system, otherwise the phone generates a harsh loud hiss in the "silent" periods of the IVR!

Migrated a customer's two 13 year old #Asterisk servers from bare metal to #Proxmox containers. Surprisingly, it all just worked and took only a couple of hours.
Now to persuade them that they should upgrade - going to be a hard sell though as what they've got does exactly what they want and there are no security issues.

TIL: on #Asterisk, the variable "${CALLERID(num):0:8}" is needed to snag the first 8 digits of a caller ID from #Voipfone in format NNNNNNNN*ext where NNNNNNNN is the account number and ext is the Voipfone extension. (I am using the account number to distinguish multiple Voipfone accounts arriving at this box)

I'd expected this to be :0:7 like anything else with a zero index into the string, but it doesn't work quite like that! Had me cursing for some time..

I've been using Linode for many many years for hosting > 100 custom Debian/Asterisk VPS's... I'm starting to look for a secondary provider, preferably with good API's for spinning up images and managing basics (power on/off, creation at datacenters from specific images). You figure this was a great opportunity to mention that #Asterisk had been moved to GitHub, or mention the new release(s).

It's incredibly sad to see how Sangoma handles Asterisk and I again am left to believe that they just don't have any care of an open source community.

It seems to have been a rather advanced #Minitel server for its time: display of interruptible pages, magnificent "Videotex art", and a sysop that spent a lot of time modernizing its server (V.23 connectivity being done via a softmodem of his own, connected to an #Asterisk server).

Seems I've found a way to beat #telephone #scammers for now…

1. set up #Asterisk to pick up the land line
2. configure an IVR that plays a recorded menu asking a simple "prove you're a human" question with a simple 2-digit answer
3. make that two digit answer an extension that rings your phone(s)
4. make it wait 60 seconds for a valid answer; if they get the answer wrong or don't answer, play a sad tuba sound effect and hang up.

So far, no one bothers with the prompt, hanging up after 6 sec.
