Did a Comet Airburst Destroy a Native American Community?

Astronomers know the large-scale devastation that can happen when a large comet or asteroid explodes in the atmosphere. Think of the Tunguska impact 1908 that flattened trees for 2,220 square kilometers of unpopulated Siberian forest. What if something like this happened to an inhabited place? Archeologists think this might have happened to the Ohio River Valley 1600-1700 years ago, wiping out the aboriginal Hopewell civilizations. The evidence isn't clear, though, and other scientists disagree.

As Edward Teller once pointed out, nuking asteroids is actually the most effective way to avoid an impact, and the only way to do so without much advance warning. The catch? To instantly vaporize an object 1 kilometer across you need a *1 gigaton* warhead. 👀

Another good example of how bad science doesn't go unchallenged. Unlike with junk science and pseudoscience, where unfounded conclusions and bad research can survive forever.

Regardless of who is right in this dispute, the data still suggests that the dinosaur-killer asteroid struck the Earth during Northern Hemisphere spring.
