Do you know what a #GalacticYear is? 🌌
It's time the #Sun takes to orbit once around the center of the #MilkyWay #Galaxy.
We move 230 km every second in orbit around the center. So it takes 230 mln years to complete 1 Galactic Year at this rate.

This time-lapse of #Hubble images, spanning 22 years, traces the ongoing aftermath of #Supernova 1987A. Hubble shows a #shockwave from the #stellar explosion hitting a ring of material previously cast off by the dying #star.

Jupiter's monster storm, the Great Red Spot, was once so large that three Earths would fit inside it. But new measurements by NASA's Hubble Space Telescope reveal that the largest storm in our solar system has downsized significantly. The red spot, which has been raging for at least a hundred years, is only the width of one Earth.
The #Hubble images were taken in 1995, 2009, and 2014.

The James Webb Space Telescope #JWST has captured a pair of #galaxies distorting each other as they merge in a great galactic get-together.
The ongoing cosmic collision imaged by Webb is known as II ZW 96. It is roughly 500 million light-years from #Earth and located in the #constellation #Delphinus, according to a Nov. 30 #NASA statement.

This is how Jupiter has protected earth for billions of years. The gravity of Jupiter keeps most asteroids and space rocks away from Earth. Without it earth would most likely be uninhabitable for humans. Mad respect for Jupiter.

Magnetic field lines detected by the airborne SOFIA observatory are overlaid on a Hubble image of the Whirlpool Galaxy (M51). Surprisingly, the magnetic field lines in the outer arms do not follow the galaxy's spiral shape. Intense star formation in these outer regions may be causing magnetic chaos, and the gravitational tug of neighboring galaxy NGC 5195 probably also plays a role.

Jupiter’s largest moon has a salty ocean that contains more water than on Earth
Forget holidays in the Mediterranean. If you want vast ocean views, Jupiter’s biggest moon Ganymede is the place to be. The moon is larger than Mercury and would be classed as a planet if it were orbiting the Sun rather than Jupiter.

💢 You can't stand on Uranus
If we ever manage to travel to the gas planets, you might be in for a bit of a shock when you step off the spaceship. That’s because Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune don’t have solid surfaces - they have a rocky core, but are mainly big balls of hydrogen and helium.
