New post!
Sometimes people think of Static Site Generators like they're the best solution ever when it comes to building websites.
I looove my #AstroWebsite but I am still not moving my Squarespace website to Astro. There are very good reasons for this.
Will continue create more small websites, however. It is such a fun thiing to do.
PS: I really need to change that social media image 🙃

Woohoo, my #AstroWebsite now has a proper domain. I decided that it was just easier to create a subdomain, so now you can access my tech blog at http://frontmatter.elizabethtai.com/
I think the SSL certs will take some time to kick in.
I think.
Next ... perhaps ... to figure out how to implement web mentions 😅 Hooo boooy #IndieWeb

I'm wondering if this is an #AstroWebsite template thing or a #VSCode thing. VSCode is very fussy with what I can push to the cloud. Today I discovered that if I copy & paste my post from #Obsidian it refuses to upload the post, even if there's absolutely nothing wrong with it. I had to paste it to Notepad for it to work. Hidden code or something?
I wonder if connecting the website to a headless CMS will make it less finicky.

Currently documenting my #AstroWebsite journey and hopefully, practising my #technicalwriting skills.
Latest post details why I chose Astro over other static website generators and CMSes. Developers often throw frameworks at me, saying that this or that SSG uses this or that framework. That's goobledygook to me. In the end, my decision came down to one thing: documentation.

I like how VS Code gets a seizure each time I change the tags in my #AstroWebsite posts or God forbid, add a punctuation to the title.
*NO. Cannot. Compuuuute!*
It chokes, spits, then somehow after hammering commands, I can commit the changes and sync it.
Why this is happening? God only knows lol.
Want to guess which one is the "all green" PageSpeed Insights score?
Yup, the static website I created using #AstroWebsite
The other one is my #Squarespace
After successfully deploying my static #website, would I like to use it for my personal blog?
NO.
😆
I moved to #Squarespace so that I can focus on writing, not solving coding problems. I need to my move somewhere that will give me the same thing, but at a lower cost. Wordpress.com with a domain name it is then.
I'll keep my #AstroWebsite asI won't be updating it often. It's handy to have a portfolio website around.

Couldn't sleep so spent the entire early morning wrestling with my static website. It turns out that any punctuation in the title of the post will cause the deployment to fail.
A simple "?" was the cause of all my deployment failures?? Insane lol.
Anyway my #AstroWebsite is kinda up - https://elizabethtai.netlify.app/
All I can say is SSG's are NOT for the faint-hearted lol.
Should non-devs attempt static #websites?
It depends if you enjoy learning how to program, like researching for workarounds & don't mind breaking things.
You will break em, but you are the kind of person who shrugs and just try again.
There's really NO SHAME in an out-of-the-box solution.
I'm just doing it because I'm cheap and possibly a little crazy. 3/3
I did it! I have created my first #AstroWebsite using the Astro Page template.
I've not deployed it to Netlify yet, however. Lots of things to fix & do, including buying a domain name 😅
So, is it feasible to create a static website? Yes, but several times I hit a few frustrating roadblocks that made me go argh. For eg... 1/2
If I'm going to use a template, it'll either be https://astro-paper.pages.dev/ as search functionality is important to me and the night mode is great.
Allrighty. I've now created a blog page with #markdown, and basically understand the logic of how all of this works and it's not hard to understand at all.
Setting up a static website is challenging for non-devs, admittedly, but not impossible.
You can have a look at the blog
page I created with markdown here:

Yay, have completed Unit 1 of the #AstroWebsite Tutorial so it's time to make website pretty. Well, at least look more presentable. Here's how the website looks like right now: https://lovely-chaja-aad9e9.netlify.app/

So excited. I'm now on Step 5 of the #AstroWebsite tutorial. My site is gonna be liiiive soon. Well, what passes as a website, anyway. One reason why I went with Astro instead of #Hugo in the end was the excellent docs by @sarah11918
I love the tutorial, checkbox format. It is more manageable for dev noobs like me. I am a fan of ticking off checkboxes lol.

Wakes up at 6am to convert XML files to markdown using https://github.com/lonekorean/wordpress-export-to-markdown and succeeded 🥳 Major blocker to creating my static page solved, on to the next blocker 😆
