If you thought the #witchtrials were a high point in #toxic #patriarchy, Tractate Sotah would like to have a word. I mean, I don’t expect the average #Rabbi whose words are recorded in #Talmud to be the most #enlightened. But the #stereotyping about #women is absolutely #offthehook in these pages. Words like #retrograde and #atavistic are spot on here. I’d like to think that most of us have moved beyond whatever that…stuff is. I fear there are too many in power who haven’t, or worse, won’t.

After a drunk backpacker swore he'd seen a charcoal-black goat with horns ablaze, curious seekers descended on the village. Was it a demon? A genetically-engineered creature from the nearby research compound? Or something more #atavistic, a relic of the pagan underworld? More visitors glimpsed it, and the legend grew.

So did our village's tourism revenue. Even old nanny seems to enjoy the joke, frolicking over the dark moors with holiday lights wound about her horns.

The sun went down, and Bren did not return to the standing stones. Lyra huddled by the fire, hungry and lonely and on edge. The night kindled #atavistic fear deep in her bones; every sound beyond the fire’s light was a monster come to devour her. She prayed for dawn to come quickly.
Before Bren left, he’d tried to be kind to her, even though he thought her half-mad. He’d told her, patiently: “Calm yourself. The fire will keep away the ghosts.”

The first guardian of The Conqueror's corpse stared Kane down with pale, unblinking eyes. The goat's flaming horns stoked atavistic fear to demand attention, but Kane knew their true danger was their power to distract. Analyzing the rest of the beast, he heard a low buzzing from its teeth, the same as the stones around the Astral Rift; those would be the real danger to avoid. Dagger in hand, Kane lowered to a crouch and waited for his adversary to charge.
