There’s a kind of elegance that’s quintessentially Californian and the Athenaeum Club in Pasadena certainly achieves it. It’s connected to Cal Tech and the mean I.Q. of its members is dauntingly high—but the ones I’ve had the pleasure of meeting are affable. It’s worth noting that Albert Einstein used to live in the club for extended periods of time though not, evidently, in the room I’m occupying.
