30th Aug '23 was an amazing night for lunar #AtmosphericOptics around the #PerigeeFullMoon! Lunar #22DegreeHalo #CircumzenithalArc + the best #paraselenae (#moondogs) I've seen, both showing #ParaselenicCircle fragments! Canon 1100D + 10-18mm lens. Click image to view full size

So excited to see a moon dog (paraselene) for the first time. Poor photo from a phone but just possible to see the spectrum of colours even in a badly light polluted urban area. #AtmosphericOptics #MoonDog

Amazing lunar #AtmosphericOptics caught on our #GMN #MeteorCameras + all sky camera last night!! Extremely bright #Paraselenae (#moondogs) + #ParaselenicCircle fragments, #UpperTangentArc #22DegreeHalo & #CircumzenithalArc #LunarAtmosphericOptics #Moon #GibbousMoon

Some more #AtmosphericOptics from #Oxfordshire on 17th July 2023. We had a nice #22DegreeHalo and really bright #parhelia (#sundogs) which had a bit of a #ParhelicCircle tail. I always love getting aircraft flying near sundogs! #OpticalEffects #IceCrystals #Haloes

On 17th July '23 I saw the best #CircumzenithalArc I've ever seen! There was also a faint hint of a #SupralateralArc which showed up on colour subtracted images. The 1st image has the top of a #22DegreeHalo. Taken from #NorthOxfordshire #AtmosphericOptics #OpticalEffects

#NMwx A stunning circumhorizon arc was observed in Clayton, NM earlier today! Photo courtesy of Deborah Snider via Canon Rebel T5i 18-135mm CIR-PL #nmwx #atmosphericoptics
Small fragment of a #CircumhorizonArc from #Oxfordshire, UK on Friday 23rd June '23. The Sun has to be higher than 58 degrees for these to form so we don't get many opportunities from the UK. I sat outside for the entire 90mins the Sun was high enough hoping to catch this. The heat was brutal, but I'm so happy even to have caught a fragment! It's only the 2nd time I've photographed one from the UK. #AtmosphericOptics #OpticalEffects

#22DegreeHalo, #9DegreeHalo + #UpperTangent arc forming a partial #CircumscribedHalo Friday 23rd June '23 from #Oxfordshire, UK. #Canon1100D + 10-18mm lens. Colour subtracted images show the detail #AtmosphericOptics #OpticalEffects

I saw two solar halo phenomena in high clouds but I only managed to cap one. I think it's a 46° halo, but they're rare so maybe it's a colourless infralateral arc?
I've already capped double sundogs and a weak 22° halo this year so I'm on a roll.

#UpperTangentArc (with aircraft flying through it!) Photos taken on 8th April 2023 from Oxfordshire, UK. UTAs are caused by refraction of sunlight through ice crystals #AtmosphericOptics #OpticalEffects

Some gorgeous #IridescentClouds from Oxfordshire on 3rd April 2023. These are very common & are caused by diffraction of sunlight through water droplets in cloud. This is very different from ice haloes & arcs which are caused by refraction through ice crystals #AtmosphericOptics

#22DegreeHalo + much less common #SupralateralArc from Oxfordshire, UK 15/03/23 ?faint #CircumzenithalArc also. Photos from 08:55-09:55UT when Sun altitude was 21-28 deg. Colour subtraction
really brought out the detail. Canon 1100D + 10mm lens #AtmosphericOptics

I am so looking forward to doing my #AtmosphericOptics talk this evening for Tiverton & Mid-Devon AS. It's one of my favourite talks and I love introducing a world of new beautiful things you can see once you know what to look for :)
Someone asked if this image is real. I don’t think so. A rainbow is a circle (or part of one), centered opposite the sun. People photograph full-circle rainbows from planes, but the light on the clouds in this image doesn’t look right for that. A rainbow wouldn’t be elongated or tilted. The center of a rainbow would be below (or close to) the horizon, since the Sun has to be above the horizon. But we don’t see the horizon in this photo at all. #atmosphericOptics #rainbows
