Scientists have found that the molecular composition of air changes significantly between day and night. They used a new technique to measure the concentrations of different gases in the atmosphere. The findings could help improve our understanding of air quality, climate change, and atmospheric chemistry.

@douglasvb @sarae @ingalls When my dad was transferred to DC, we moved to #Reston Virginia. It was summer '68. Reston was still a tiny enclave then, with LOTS of #Forest and streams throughout. Me and a bunch of other lads went nuts, roaming the woods all day. Those experiences set me on a trajectory, to (after some detours) eventually study #Biology , #Botany , #PlantEcology , #Evolution ...and (further detours) #AtmosphericScience .

This week our #UNSW Earth's Systems & Sustainability students have been collecting air samples from around #Sydney. I offered to collect some too, and bags of air are enjoying the train commute from the New South Wales Central Coast.
The samples will be analysed by the students for the greenhouse gas methane. Using isotope analyses, they will identify the sources of the methane in Sydney's air. Will it be leaky city gas infrastructure? Or plumes from industry? Or clean air from offshore?

The #UNSW #earthscience teaching lab is all set up for start of term.
We have a new 'cave animal' poster on display for 2023 - this year it is the glow worm. Thanks to the 'Australian Cave Animal of the Year'. We have hundreds of free stickers for the students.
And an isotope analyser is analysing the #carbondioxide and #methane of the air in the lab. In a couple of weeks, students will be collecting air quality data from all over #sydney for their project.

Millions of people in the northeast this weekend experienced sub zero temps thanks to an aggressive longwave trough. But what exactly is the #PolarVortex that causes it?

V nice work w implications for #paleomonsoon reconstructions by Thejna Tharammal, G. Bala, & Jesse Nusbaumer showing using an isotope-enabled climate simulation, that NE monsoon rains over India can be associated with more negative δ¹⁸O signatures than southwest (summer) monsoon #precipitation in spite of being associated with *lesser* rainfall amounts. Interesting to note that the match (or lack thereof) with observations suggests that we still have some ways to go to understand the isotopic controls on this system (seasonality/events?):

Wow what a difference a day makes: a few hours of sunshine peeking through the cloud deck in Northern California between waves from the eastern Pacific #atmosphericriver. Still rough conditions though for many folks digging out or have suffered catastrophic damage. #Atmosphericscience tells us that warmer #atmosphere can hold more moisture, leading to wilder weather - and predicted for #climatechange

@futurebird I struggled at algebra. The emphasis on proofs didn't help. At the time I had an undiagnosed learning disability. Managed to get the hang of algebra in a self-paced course at a community college. Still have the LD - diagnosed only after a lackluster college experience, and before grad school. With professional help, figured out strategies and what works. Before grad school, re-took calculus. Was able to do ok later in grad school studying #AtmosphericScience , #CFD
