HECS indexation increasing unaffordable student debt

“In 2020 and previous years, indexation was sitting around 1.8%- 2% and then a jump to 3.9% in 2022 and in 2023 a whopping 7.1%…

“Your HECS debt is indexed on 1 June every year before the end of the financial year. Really, it should be indexed after the start of the new financial year on 1 July.

“The problem with the indexation system is that the ATO hasn’t calculated the repayments your employer has made throughout the year, hence they are applying indexation to your debt amount from the start of the financial year.

“This means that a larger dollar amount will be indexed causing you to end up with more debt added on.

“The ATO should be including the payments you have already made to reduce the debt for that financial year.”

There is practical common sense in a department calling in expert consultant specialists for a subject completely beyond their main policy and legislation sphere. Such as #ATO cannot be expert in all businesses and industries their taxes cover.

A hypothetical example could be consulting the AMA if a new tax policy was somehow connected to Health for example. It may be directly affecting GP's, or a cost of treatment, etc.#

This can to be done in house by PS project groups convening different mixes of consulting groups around the country and consolidating results. Also involved consulting staff who would implement the changes, tax agents who would need to apply them, and so on. Also groups of relevant citizen associations such as those suffering & needing such treatment.

That is actual genuine consultation.
Not the rush to justify a government's (often stupid) ideas for high fees, which is basically all the Big4 do.

But I have no faith in Senator Gallagher's justification of using another 'middleman' ie a consulting group, when a PS dept should be able to organise its own consultation, WITHOUT POLITICAL BIAS, and have sound advice to provide to govt who can give it proper consideration.

It used to be possible.

All these people whinging about the the politians screwing them over with their #tax #refund and the fairness of the tax system… And yet, 99% of them will happily vote for the #Labor / #Liberal duopoly.
