#question of the day: What #software does one use for #writing non-fiction? I've been using Microsoft #Word but find it a bit cumbersome.

I've heard about #Scrivener and co., but most of these seem oriented towards fiction #authors

#Zettlr and #Atticus also come to mind. I like that the former is #OSS and uses #markdown and haven't tried Atticus yet - not a huge fan of web-only, proprietary software for authoring.

Working on formatting my next #book and learning how to use #Atticus So far I'm having lotsa fun!

Yesterday I used #Procreate to make 3 new maps and they were so easy to incorporate. as were my lil chapter doodles.

#Formatting was holding me back for so long, it was a real pain to do. But now I'm really enjoying it.

Well I'm figuring out this #Atticus larky... I've gone through and formatted, tweaked and rewritten 11 chapters of my next book now.

Hopefully I'll get around to a summer release! Just 40 more chapters an index and some art work to sort out!

Oo talking of artwork... What do you all think of this as a book cover (It's a rough idea ATM)?

I let #Atticus know about the issue with the word count and also about how having back matter separated helped a lot with keeping things tidy, but unfortunately, it seems to be impossible to have it back.

Been quite a day of learning for me. First I wanted to familiarise myself with #Notion. An app I found latish last night and liked the look of.

Then I looked into #SecondBrain and #PARA as organisation methods.

Then a writing and formatting app called #Atticus

All of these are very new to me. All of them need me to learn a lot more to get the best out of them. But... So far I like what I see and I've played with them a little as I've read and watched videos and haven't broken anything! 😆

All who wonder about the back matter having gone from #Atticus after the update and now the word count being counted into the body (which sucks, because: really??) they just confirmed it after I asked support about it.

I submitted a support case to #Atticus and hoping they can explain to me if the back matter break will come back. So, no #AmEditing for me, today.
Now, I can either sit on the balcony or give another shot at that darn non-fiction chapter. Or both. Or none of it. 🤔

Hmmm... seems after the Atticus update while the front matter is still there, it doesn't say "front matter" anymore and the Back Matter separation is completely gone...
Anybody else encountered that and knows how to fix it?

Found out about publishing software called #Atticus. And so, I bought it. Holy crap. It formats everything for you and you get to see the different ways the manuscript looks in print, or on an iPad screen

I think you could use the open source #Calibre software and export to Epub -> import to Scribe. Or even easier (if you don't have one already) signup for free Draft2Digital account. Their tool creates formatted eBooks from Word docs. I also use Aticus.io to do book formatting. It's a good cross--platform alternative to Vellum for non-Mac authors.
