« Stop all the clocks… cut off the telephone … prevent the dog from barking with a juicy bone …»

The scene that makes me weep. All the time.

What a stanza:

All types that can intrigue the writer's fancy
Or sensuality approves are here.
And I each meal-time with the families
The animal brother and his serious sister,
Or after breakfast on the urned steps watching
The defeated and disfigured marching by,
Have thought of you, Christopher, and wished beside me
Your squat spruce body and enormous head.

Defenceless under the night
Our world in stupor lies;
Yet, dotted everywhere,
Ironic points of
Flash out wherever the Just
Exchange their messages:
May I, composed like them
Of and of ,
Beleaguered by the same
Negation and despair,
Show an affirming .

There is no such thing as the State
And no one exists alone;
Hunger allows no choice
To the citizen or the police;
We must love one another or die.
-W.H. Auden, born this day in 1907

We have long accepted not only Chandler but every motherfucker who writes as writing works of art. But the reason that this passage sticks with me is the naming of the Great Wrong Place. limitedinc.blogspot.com/2023/0

Counterpoint: from Auden

The years shall run like rabbits,
For in my arms I hold
The Flower of the Ages,
And the first love of the world.

But all the clocks in the city
Began to whirr and chime:
'O let not Time deceive you,
You cannot conquer Time.

'Out on the lawn I lie in bed'...
An outdoor or upstairs album for dreaming, like a perfect day bottled and preserved. It will help see you through this winter

Useless quote for 21 December 2022:

"Dear water, clear water, playful in all your streams,
As you dash or loiter through life who does not love
To sit beside you, to hear you and see you,
Pure being, perfect in music and movement?"

Great find by @audencuttings posted on The Bird. But I'm not convinced it means that actually decided "to get rid of his copy" of the Claudel book in particular. The Audens as a family were moving house in October 1938. Perhaps , and/or his parents, were just donating to the university library some volumes (including duplicates?) they didn't want to pay to have carted across Harborne? twitter.com/audencuttings/stat

“But once in a while the odd thing happens,
Once in a while the dream comes true,
And the whole pattern of life is altered,
Once in a while the moon turns blue.”
