Oxford Drum Gate is on sale - if you haven't messed around with this thing, believe me when I say that it is unlike any drum gate you've ever used before. It's not like I get excited about fucking *gates* all the time. I highly recommend picking it up.

This month at uni I had to do for "Wasp" by a band called "Law of Attraction" for the second main project of my first year! Just one last project to go, due in 2 weeks now.

It's been really weird, last time I burned out and hated everything by the end of the 2nd semester, but this time I'm getting into it more and more, and I'm at the end of the 3rd trimester.

may be a hard career, and is scary, but I'd take this over forcing myself to study and work in CS for the rest of my life.

Here's my mix (and master using Ozone 10 :3)! I don't know how SAE got their hands on the original stems of the song, but it was pretty cool mixing it as if I was the real mixing engineer of the song.

(note: I don't actually know the band, I'm not affiliated with them, we were just provided multi-track stems as part of our projects for a bunch of songs, and I just happened to choose this one!)

today in the our lecturer went over the ASP analogue console at uni, and we set up a spot-miked mid/side drum recording.

it was so cool seeing how everything is done and it's one of the rare things where it really did sound amazing in the recordings. I also love how the audient has GENEROUS saturation so you can make kicks, snares and hats sound SUPER fucked up, and then just attenuate the channel since everything is post-fader when sent to

I still cant stand protools and I find it really antiquated, but I'm learning to like how well it works for mixing and editing.

my group's project later is to remake a song, using a drum recording as its basis, and we've chosen to redo a rock-y song into a synth pop one. I can't remember the song's name. I also get an excuse to finally take my to uni!!! we're going to try and get things nice and analogue and saturated now that we have access to the Audient.

on a sidenote, wow setting up 7 microphones is pain. at least having 3 of the same mic is a lot easier to gain stage and setup than having a lot of different mics with different quirks.

On Re-creative this week, Joe and I hosted two of his old CBC radio colleagues to help launch Joe's new book, Adventures in the Radio Trade. This was a "live" podcast, and we're sharing it warts and all!

The way this all works and how sound designers make “dinosaur sounds” for movies is super interesting.

Last night, I mixed a track from our show two days ago to go with a video our photo/video guru took during. It got posted on the individual and main band accounts today (instagram.com/reel/CukPFCjrR4E) and I saw this in the comments.

I’m… kinda losing it because the idea of Misha Fucking Mansoor complimenting my work was an unthinkable pipe dream five years ago. Let alone something I did in three hours in a hotel room with only my in-ears as monitors.

I just upgraded my recording studio to HDX, and what a huuuuuge difference! My studio’s been running Pro Tools in “Native” mode since we retired our TDM system nearly a decade ago. It feels so good to be back and the new “Hybrid” engine is really incredible. I’d been trying to convince myself that “native” was just fine, and for mixing it really is…but recording bands is different and this upgrade feels “night and day” better.

I don't think he's on the FediVerse, but he keeps the DIY YouTube audio engineering flame alive like no other:

Network capacity-management and analogies that have longer legs than expected:

Some time ago, I realised that the negative/waste connotations of "redundancy" could be avoided by talking in terms of "headroom."

Just now, I realised that the analogy to audio engineering goes further:
- Rate-limiting = compression.
- Dropping packets/requests = clipping.

The compression analogy fits nicely, when you compare TCP backoff/increase strategies to pumping/breathing (like the currently-fashionable sidechain-compression on the mixbus).

Of course, this is only useful when talking to system or network engineers who also understand audio engineering.
