Tomorrow, Thursday March 24 2023, 10 AM Eastern, I will be giving a talk at the Boston University Center for Stroke Recovery...which is also on zoom! Come join if you can. #Hearing, #speech, face masks, pupillometry, brain imaging, and probably some other stuff i'm forgetting. #AuditoryNeuroscience #Listening Effort

Consequences of Acoustic Challenge During Spoken Communication
Everyday communication is full of acoustic challenges, including background noise, competing talkers, or assistive devices. How do listeners understand speech in the midst of this noise? Evidence from multiple sources is consistent with a shared resource framework of speech comprehension in which domain-general cognitive processes supported by discrete regions of frontal cortex are required for successfully understanding speech. These increased cognitive demands can be captured using behavior pupillometry and functional brain imaging. Although frequently studied in the context of hearing loss, these principles have broader implications for our understanding of how auditory and cognitive factors interact during spoken language comprehension.

Wow, prior art from 1973! It is someone's PhD dissertation. I don't know if I was previously aware of a P. W. Stevenson. I cannot figure out what names those initials stand for.
Hello #Auditory #Science folks, do you know who this is?

New account, new #introduction
I am working on a PhD in music theory with a specialization in music cognition. I'm pretty new to the cognition stuff, with my formal training to date being very music focused (from flute and piano performance to composition to music theory). I am still at the dissertation proposal stage, but will be doing research related to auditory perception and auditory scene analysis.
I have another account in the fediverse on a more humanities focused server. I decided to try out a second instance, with a more science-based "Local" community. Server A is currently broken, so while the sysadmins there figure out how to fix it seemed like a good time for me to start exploring another instance. My username is the same for both. I may migrate over here, or I may keep using both. Time will tell.

#introduction
I am neuroscientist and engineer. Our lab at Johns Hopkins University BME is interested in how the brain computes information about the world and how this representation is shaped by sensory experience from early development up until old age. We focus on the auditory system and use in vitro and in vivo optical and electrophysiological methods, behavioral approaches, etc.

@nannybee @ttpphd A very big part of understanding speech occurs in the brain rather than the ears. So, speech processing can potentially be affected like many other things your brain does when you’re tired. The question of how well the speech perception process is understood is a big one and depends in part on what exactly is meant by “speech”. An expert in #AuditoryNeuroscience might have a better answer.
Hello Mastodon, we meet again.
I'm a microscopist with a background in #infectiousdisease , #vaccines , and #auditoryneuroscience (a perfectly sensible mix). I run the light and electron microscopy facility at the UCL Ear Institute with my technical hat on, and collaborate on projects about the structural basis of #hearing and #balance with my researcher hat on. With my outreach hat on, I co-chair the outreach committee in the #volumeem #vEM community initiative.
I may have too many hats.
