@autistic_enby I hate how ‘modern restaurants' have no carpet now. ‘Back in the day' many did and it was WONDERFUL. But they also had smoking sections so... win some lose some. I was always distracted by projectors too in school. I would either hear the fans too loudly -- and they would sit me near them! Or I would get distracted by the dust particles floating…

@Richard_Littler @actuallyautistic my low gain hearing aids for #AuditoryProcessingDisorder have been a metaphorical godsend for this. I get way less overloaded/over stimulated since I got them.

Blue light blocking glasses work similarly for me in those awful fluorescent lighting scenarios, though somewhat less effectively, but much cheaper

My experience with a neuro-psych evaluation:

-8 hours long, spread over 2 days, not counting results.

- over 500 questions on paper, 2 hour interview + interview of loved one, they prefer to interview a caregiver from patient's childhood.

-Puzzles, etc designed to test attention span, frustration tolerance, ability to understand tone, facial expressions, etc. #APD made these harder.

They have cochlear implants for people who can't hear but want to. When is someone going to invent an auditory off switch for people who can hear but don't want to. Autistic people, people with misophonia, or even just someone who likes to be able to read in peace from time to time would benefit.

I would be willing to pay a lot of money for something like that. Ear plugs and ear muffs don't cut it by themselves, and they cause me other forms of suffering like pain or ear infections if I overuse them.

Sounds fascinating. Halakhah around hearing loss has long been complex and troubling. Can you say more or point to some sources?

My interest here is personal and professional: I have a 50% #HearingLoss plus #AuditoryProcessingDisorder, and as a student I served a #Deaf congregation.
