Tonight is #BurnsNight when Robert Burns is remembered worldwide as the national poet of #Scotland.
Robert is also a favorite #Garden poet.
His 1794 poem 'Red Red Rose' starts with the familiar verse:
"O my Luv's like a red, red #Rose..."
Robert's most famous #Poem is now a familiar #Song: #AuldLangSyne.

At the end of the meal the host gives a speech at which point everyone stands and sings Auld Lang Syne, crossing their arms and joining hands at the line “And here's a hand, my trusty fere!”.
A friend and I have been asked to perform a couple of songs at a neighbour's not so traditional Burns Night (there is haggis and #whisky though!) and we'll be doing this alongside two or three other Scottish songs.
This is not the tune that most folk will recognise and it has all the verses that are usually missed out.

Happy/Happier New Year! I was thinking of the lyrics to "Auld Lang Syne" because it's a drinking song, as the picture below indicates, often with a wassail bowl nearby. We "take a cup of kindness yet for days of auld lang syne", or we toast to the old times, to old friends, to the past. I am nostalgic for sure about great points in time and great times with people, many who are no longer with us. But we can't re-live or re-create the past, and there are aspects of it we shouldn't try to. Maybe it will serve us well to not just toast Auld Lang Syne, but to take a cup of kindness, or show actual kindness today as a toast to the future.
