A panorama of an auroral australis I viewed from Hoopers Inlet on the Otago Peninsula back in February 2023 #aurora #auroraaustralis
4 years ago this evening I set off from Christchurch New Zealand on an unforgettable journey into the southern auroral oval on board NASA's SOFIA observatory. What a night! #aurora #auroraaustralis #beauty

If you are in Queenstown tonight why not come to the amazing aurora talks at Wakatipu High School starting at 5pm! See you there :-) #aurora #auroraaustralis
I timed my arrival at Hoopers Inlet to coincide with the end of astronomical twilight. Here's the first picture I got of the nascent aurora at 6:52pm local time last night. Some weirdly coloured rays were dancing in the southern sky. I knew I was in for a great night! #aurora #Auroraaustralis #NewZealand

So many images from last night. I actually had 4 cameras running during the #auroraaustralis display. Finally downloaded the data from my Canon EOS Ra which is red sensitive. Here's a 6 second exposure taken at 23:09 local time. What a night! #beauty #astronomy #NewZealand

If you don’t currently follow @iangriffin, you are missing out on their spectacular aurora australis footage / photography. It is a lovely addition to your timeline and I highly, highly recommend following them.

Here's a quick and dirty timelapse of tonight's Aurora Australis as seen from the Otago Peninsula in New Zealand. This started at about 21:26 local time and covers about an hour of the display. #aurora #Auroraaustralis #beauty

Having a bit of an archival day today to celebrate the King's birthday. Here's a shot taken at 20:53:17 on 25th July 2016. It shows the #auroraaustralis over Papanui Inlet in New Zealand #astronomy #aurora

Ten years ago today I witnessed my first display of the aurora australis here in New Zealand. My first picture was rubbish (taken on a then nearly 7 year old Canon digital rebel camera!) #aurora #auroraaustralis
I am passionate about Astrophotography and the Aurora is one of the most incredible things you can often see. The Sun runs on around 11 year cycles and we are starting to come out of a quiet period where we start to see more Coronal Mass Ejections (CME's) which, given appropriate conditions, sun/earth orientation, and timings can lead to some incredible Aurora. I missed out on the 'big' aurora on the morning of the 24th April 2023 (which was a bummer) but captured more of it on the night of the 24th April 2023.
This image is of the Aurora Australis which was visible over Eagles Nest Lookout in Inverloch, Victoria, Australia. It was photographed on 24/4/2023 9:51:32 pm with a Sony ILCE-7RM4 (A7R 4) and Tamron 15-30mm F2.8-2.8 G @ 16 mm (with a Nikon to Sony Adapter), 30.0 sec at Æ’ / 2.8, ISO 6400. I edited this image in Lightroom, and then in Topaz Photo AI (for DeNoise and Sharpening).

"The unusually high levels of #SolarStorm activity meant the Aurora Australis could be viewed far farther north than the lights are typically seen, and in cities where light pollution would normally render them invisible."

It was crazy out on the south coast tonight, hundreds(!) of people hopefully waving their cellphones at the sea. We climbed up to Ataturk's Memorial, quietly awaiting its ANZAC dawn, and filmed the aurora's beams fading over passing ferries
