The first step in the project was lots of interviews with Deaf folks "to make sure we're designing a technology they actually want to use in a way that they actually want to use it".
It's not the first time people have tried to come up with a technology to help better connect hearing and Deaf people. But often those attempts have been driven by assumptions about what Deaf people want, says Adele Greedy-Vogel, another research assistant on the project who is a hearing child of Deaf adults.
"A lot of technology in this space … is so that hearing people can understand Deaf people," Adele says.
"There's always an emphasis on hearing people being able to understand and having access to all the information.
"We really need to change that framing because it's Deaf people that need the access, not hearing people."
New addition to my #SignLanguage resource collection. Unfortunately it's #ASL not #Auslan
What if Siri knew Auslan?

Such a cool story about a #deaf bloke from #Afghanistan whose work colleagues learned #Auslan https://www.sbs.com.au/news/article/emad-struggled-at-work-because-hes-deaf-so-all-his-colleagues-learned-auslan/3d10s58bc
I lose the ability to make conversation when I'm really tired and I get more and more quiet. It takes energy to think of what to say to people and always has. Getting older has helped me to establish some really basic scripts but it still takes time and effort to retrieve them from my mind when I meet up with people and I think it always will. I can listen and understand without any trouble but I can't express well.
Now I find that I am the same with #Auslan. My teacher says my receptive skills are excellent but I know my expressive skills are not at that level. I have the 'double whammy' of not having fluency in Auslan plus not having an intuitive fluency for conversation.
I am desperate to improve my skills in Auslan and I know with time and patience I will get better but I will always struggle with participating in conversation IN ANY LANGUAGE and this realisation makes me feel sad, mainly because I know it will be just as hard to make #Deaf friends and develop connections with Deaf people as it is for me to make hearing friends etc.
Hopefully, being useful will help Deaf people tolerate me at least because I really want to be an Auslan interpreter. I feel like I am at a disadvantage not being able to integrate into the Deaf community as well as I could if my conversation skills were better. I just wish I had more to offer the Deaf community.

• I bought a new yoga/exercise mat and it's the nicest one I have ever had
• We had prawn and starfruit hotpot and sautéed morning glory for dinner
• I found that Auslan and BSL have a lot of commonality, so I have a bunch of new YouTube to help me learn. #Auslan

It just occurred to me* that I never did an intro post.
My name's David, I'm a support worker with Auslan qualifications, working with a number of Deaf and hearing people (and one Deafblind). I also have a Deaf spouse.
I'm interested in accessibility and training (for professional reasons), games, making things (Current project - a fiddly little model of a Cyberman head), and the usual nerd stuff (because it's fun).
I'm also a member of Toastmasters International, which I joined to improve my presentation skills for the goal of becoming an Auslan interpreter. But at this stage I'll probably give up on interpreting accreditation and go for a coordinator type role.

The problem: A tiny Australian charity (us) for disabled artists needs to raise $500 a month to cover Auslan interpretation for our fledgling monthly online art networking meeting (aimed at Australian disabled artists, but has international participants). We are tax exempt - but not a DGR.
Request: Is there anyone out there who has a solution that will not involve us having to spend hours doing work like a crowd funding campaign (we are time and energy poor).
Please boost request this so we can reach the person on Mastodon who has the answer (very happy to be sponsored by a company that isn't destroying the earth or society)

Thank you!

Some Deaf people sign "Boxing Day" with the sign for a box you put things in, some sign it with the sign for fisticuffs. The difference seems to be in how serious their personality is, but that's just an observation not a study or anything.

• I have learned lots of words of Auslan from a free online course, and there is hope for me actually getting to know this! #Auslan
• There are lots of ibises round here and they are so elegant #ibis #BinChicken
• We have rediscovered Time Team on YouTube and I am practically an expert on Roman shards, honest I am.

@DC fun fact - in the southern dialect of #Auslan (Australian Sign Language) the sign for “car” comes from the motion of using a tiller, but in the northern dialect it is the motion of using a steering wheel. https://auslan.org.au/dictionary/words/car-1.html

@ChrisRawlins thank you 😊 My son has various learning difficulties (ADHD, dyspraxia, anxiety and a severe stutter) but is not hearing impaired. He did have hearing problems as a toddler (due to multiple ear infections) and required grommets. He is being taught #Auslan simply because it interests him, so he chose to study it this year in year 10. His teacher is hearing impaired and is lovely 🥰
