Australian freelance writers and authors - as I write in Look-It's Your Book! - you're missing out if you're not signed up for ELR, PLR and CAL.

In that vein, here's a great piece by @ViviennePearson with the nuts and bolts of how to sign up for Copyright payments (CAL) so you are compensated for your work being copied by schools/uni's, government and businesses.

'Freelance Christmas' is always great to look forward to so have a read!

Just Released by Hague Publishing, ‘Asparagus Grass’ by Adrian Deans.

A secret story of pan-cosmic enormity.

‘Kurt Vonnegut meets Jason Bourne. Another imaginative Adrian Deans rollercoaster ride on an extra-terrestrial scale’
Peter Goldsworthy AM, Author of ‘Maestro’ and
‘Honk If You Are Jesus’.

'Asparagus Grass catapults everyday life into an interstellar spectacle. With a beer-loving gardener as our unlikely hero, this tale weaves cosmic chaos with terrestrial toil, resulting in a narrative as gripping as it is hilarious. Adrian Deans' narrative style is a whirlwind of humour, excitement, and genuine emotion. Five stars for this out-of-this-world adventure!'
Carola Schmidt (Reviewer and award-winning author).

'If you enjoy science fiction and unconventional narratives, you'll find this book to be a delightful and captivating read. It combines everyday life, cosmic battles, and eccentric characters to provide a fresh take on the vastness of the universe and how unlikely heroes can arise from ordinary circumstances. I recommend it to every reader.'
Heather (BookGirlBrown Reviews).

'A great binge read for someone who likes sci fi romance with a little conspiracy.'
Jmortiff (The Book & Beverage Review – Youtube & Goodreads reviewer).

'Good satire is rare these days so it’s a joy to find a book dealing with important social and political issues without ramming its preachy message down your throat. Add a cracking plot and you have a winner.'
Karen (Goodreads).

I had never heard of so-called "sophisticated picture books" until last year. "Cicada" by Shaun Tan was my first and I love this story. It is definitely not for toddlers!

Authors: want to know how to give your book the best chance of being chosen by Australian libraries? One of my favourite places is my local library. Not just because of all the wonderful librarians and the books I get to borrow, but I also get the buzz of seeing my own books on the recently returned shelf, or hear that my farm memoir is being enjoyed or dissected by another bookclub. This week too, Australian authors received our Lending Rights notification (the annual payment AU authors receive if there are at least 50 copies of your book available in AU libraries). There are many reasons why it's important for authors (trad and indie!) to work on building library demand for our books, and for all the writers who have asked me how to go about it, I've created a handy online course with all the info, tips, links, registration pages, list of distributors, marketing ideas and downloads you need to give you and your book the best chance at Australian library success. You can access the course at www.boldauthors.com - hope it helps you achieve your goals!

ArtsHub article by Thuy On: "New research from Amazon Kindle reveals 50% of Australians only read between one and five books in 2022, but 44% of the population intend to read more in 2023." Also: "Physical books remain the majority of books read (67.9%)".

First of 2023: Minds Went Walking: Paul Kelly's Songs reimagined. It's a collection of works inspired by Paul Kelly songs compiled by Jock Serong, Mark Smith and Neil A White.

It's an interesting collection. The pieces vary wildly in style from personal memoirs, to narrative fiction, to stream of consciousness dreamscapes.

I enjoyed reading it, though I enjoyed some stories more than others. My two favourites, both of which stirred me to tears at points, were:

Special treatment - Gina Williams
Wake - Sam Carmody

Do recommend.

Me, Antbag & Fleabag by Gayle Kennedy

A series of vignettes about the life of an aboriginal Australian woman, her partner, and their dog. They alternate between laugh out loud funny and heartbreaking as they navigate the world of white Australia and then take breaks back with their mob.

"Arnold Webb" is a piece that appears in my new collection The Night Fisher Elegies which is available now wherever good books are sold (print and digital). It explores a life, a love and a fox.

Finally had my first bout with Grimmish! What a remarkable book. It's an especially good read for authors who want to explore Michael Winkler's unusual writing craft.

I absolutely enjoyed the creativity of this "exploded non-fiction novel"...the blend of memoir, writing tips, historical happenings, footnotes, social/psychological commentary and full on made up mischief, mayhem and mess (warning: there is lots of male on male sporting violence in the book).

What's also remarkable is that in addition to the innovation and craft he brought to this book (based on an American boxer's bouts in Australia in the early 1900's), Michael Winkler's dedication to the project...his self-publishing journey - his shortlisting for the Miles Franklin Literary Award and then the publishing deal with Puncher and Wattman is like going twelve rounds in and of itself.

How many publishers would let an author launch their book in a country town vs the big cities? Helps if you're one of the top-selling authors in Australia! Scott Pape to do his latest Barefoot Investor book launch at the Lismore Book Warehouse which was devastated by the February floods when 14.3m of water went through the store. 😭 echo.net.au/2022/11/author-of-

A week ago I finished reading 'The White Girl' by indigenous Australian author Tony Birch. I cannot get the characters, setting and circumstances out of my head. Such a compelling, compassionate, courageous and beautifully written book. One of my favourite fiction books EVER.
