are one of the most majestic and industrious insects on the planet.

I can watch them for hours. And often do in my travels around .

They’ve been active the last couple of months pollinating and feeding, naturally, given it has been the height of summer here in .

Below are some of my shots of busy doing their thing throughout my travels around this great city. Also some interesting facts about these gorgeous creatures!

Only female honey bees can sting, the males (drones) are not able to sting.

A typical active colony may have around 50,000 workers
Honey bees communicate through pheromones.

Honey bees fly up to 25 klm/h (15 mph) and beat their wings 200 times per second or 12,000 beats per minute!

Drones die after mating.

Foraging honey fly about 88,000 klm’s (55,000 miles) collectively, to produce a half a kilogram (approx 1 pound) of honey, visiting around 2 million flowers.

Each honey makes about 1 twelfth of a teaspoon of honey in its entire life time 😳

A worker honeybees lifetime? Between 30 - 60 days.

These bees were photographed in on a bush.

They were ‘busy’ indeed!!

While staying in Sydney's Hawkesbury region, I went for a NYE ride to the Colo River. An early start on a humid day, I was entranced by the cicada noise and stopped to listen properly.

They 'pulsed' through the bush in waves of thousands. My short video tries to capture it.

The ride itself was a relatively simple descent but a 30 min sweaty slog back out!

[Edit: didn't realise you can't mix media types on a post.]

You’re looking at the from a 30 metre high viewing platform in -

For mine, the bush is somewhat of a paradox inasmuch, as whilst it appears harsh and dry, it also looks magnificently lush as well.

I feel this is my true home!

I love this setting… around 35°, so that’s around high 90s Fahrenheit.

This is untainted nature at its best.

I’m writing this from the third survey area at Larakoona, surrounded by soldier beetles, as a fox darts from its den under the furthest gum tree. I can hear Rainbow bee-eaters, sacred kingfishers, cockies and a pied butcherbird warbling it’s beautiful song. There’s a cool breeze, which is good as it’s almost 30C, that is keeping the flies at bay. It doesn’t seem to worry the beetles or clouds of butterflies.
