The thing I miss most about Australia when I'm not here is the magnificent bird noises - so loud and expressive. No surprise that 2 of my 3 votes for Australia's Favourite Animal Sound are birds: magpie and black cockatoo. My other vote is the poddlebonk because they sound like lovely hot summer nights to me

Got home after dark and Chewie the brushtail was already in the tree eating some berries. She came down to grab some apple before departing again on possum business for the night.

PS I've called her Chewie because her right ear has a chunk chewed out of it.

This beautiful little grub is a Leafwing (Doleschallia bisaltide) larvae. He has shiny blue and red spots that only show when the light is right.

Only one possum in the airbnb today. The friendly one with the chewed left ear. Just given her some apple for dinner before she heads out for the evening.

This little possum cam across on the wires, over the roof and then hanging under the eaves.

Looked like it was hoping for a feed. Very polite little possum.

Checking out the local wildlife in my garden this morning and came across this female St Andrew's Cross spider (Argiope keyserlingi) Spider who'd just wrapped her breakfast.
Her web was destroyed yesterday from the strong winds but she's started this new one.

Re-posting after correcting a faulty link. Thanks to those who let me know. <3

"Museums stocked with 'platysausages' as taxidermists get it wrong on Australian animals."
πŸ”— abc.net.au/news/2023-01-05/poo
"We often find flatypuses that are pancake flat. We find fattypuses that are overstuffed, or sometimes the platysausage, which is long and thin and sausage-shaped."

Great article By Zoe Kean , ABC Radio Hobart, with food for thought for museums.

We talked about the confusion experienced by Europeans seeing our Platypus for the first time in Episode 19: The Platypus Controversy.
Very amusing. πŸ˜„. Link to listen below if you’re interested.

This guy came to check me out when he brought his family of females & joeys - just to make sure I wasn't a threat.
Thankfully I passed muster.
Taken at Mill Beach, Murramarang, NSW. The holiday villa was in the national park with lots of wildlife visitors.

We went to the Jenolan Caves today and on the way back to the car, I spied a couple of Superb Lyrebirds (one male, one female). The male was making interesting noises (as the do). I followed them up into the bush and then came across this adorable Rock Wallaby.
