Finally had my first bout with Grimmish! What a remarkable book. It's an especially good read for authors who want to explore Michael Winkler's unusual writing craft.

I absolutely enjoyed the creativity of this "exploded non-fiction novel"...the blend of memoir, writing tips, historical happenings, footnotes, social/psychological commentary and full on made up mischief, mayhem and mess (warning: there is lots of male on male sporting violence in the book).

What's also remarkable is that in addition to the innovation and craft he brought to this book (based on an American boxer's bouts in Australia in the early 1900's), Michael Winkler's dedication to the project...his self-publishing journey - his shortlisting for the Miles Franklin Literary Award and then the publishing deal with Puncher and Wattman is like going twelve rounds in and of itself.

In good news for writers, there's a thriving independent publishing scene in Australia of small yet mighty publishers such as Affirm, Black Inc , Brio Books, Fremantle Press, Giramondo, Griffith Review, Hardie Grant, Puncher & Wattmann, Scribe and more. Nov 24-26 the Small Press Network (SPN), of which these publishers are members, is running the annual Independent Publishing Conference. There will be some truly useful presentations/statistics/forecasts/workshops across the 3 days and you can attend online or in person at The Wheeler Centre in Melbourne. On Day 3 I'll be running a workshop on publishing timelines ie: what authors need to do when to successfully bring a book to market. So many great sessions. I need to borrow my 4 year old’s attitude. I’ll often hear something like, “I’m good at jumping!” Then he’ll demonstrate. And it’s not an especially brilliant example of jumping. But he completed his objective: he jumped. And he had fun doing it.

If I applied the same attitude to my writing, I think I’d feel a lot better about it. As in, the words themselves don’t have to be prize-winning. I just have to do the thing - write - and have fun with it. I reckon if I do that, I’m “good at writing”.
