The great irony, of course, of / / is that the voices of people are being drowned out by the very people who are oppressing us, silencing us, abusing us, commodifying our very bodies.

Important to remind everyone on that labels such as high/low functioning, support needs, speaking, masking, etc are not helpful. These things are not static. Treating them as if they are is ableist.

Every person can experience variations in support needs, functioning, masking, speaking, and any other label which outsiders may see as permanent. What & how one is today isn't necessarily what one will be tomorrow. Life changes us. None of that is permanent.

Just because today I am verbal and appear to be "high functioning" to you doesn't mean that I will be so next week, or even a minute from now. While you may see me as a "success" and "well adjusted" now, next month I may be in an institution, catatonic and non-verbal.

Perhaps today I am "living unmasked" but tomorrow that can be different, depending on MANY THINGS. That being said, I may not be. We are all different. Each person has their own brain and their own life. NOTHING IS PERMANENT. Lose the labels.

But to that end, this is MY take. I DO NOT speak for all autistic people, just like no one autistic person speaks for another. Our experiences are different AND shared. Respect that & if you want to learn ONE thing during it's that we are all unique.

Since it’s , I wanted to post the art I did to celebrate me, a 23 year old with a full time job, getting a fidget spinner ring.

(Complete with a pic of me rocking the ring and headphones, with my emotional support plush griffin in the BG.)

Don’t let neurotypical standards curb your joy of “childish” things! :D

Apparently it's and maybe I am too sensitive, but that doesn't really work for me…

Autism awareness: "OMG they EXIST"
Autism acceptance: "Okay, if you MUST"

I'd love to see . (Or year.) I know it's a lot to ask because people. So maybe ?

Anyway, this is what an person looks like (dedicated to people who think "you don't look autistic" is a compliment).

So we're back to the 1980's where if you appear to be coping it's swept under the carpet and nobody bothers because you're just a bit weird instead of .

Which leads to burnout, mental health problems and hugely increased suicide risk in later life.

For me still sounds quite passive.

We need a 'let's make this ableist/allistic world more accessible for all week'/year (but catchier! 😆).

The sensory overload experienced by autistic people in far too many spaces is unnecessary and only serves to further traumatise an already marginalised community.

There are so many hashtags for / that I'm always a bit confused and overwhelmed. Awareness vs Acceptance, generic vs Day, Week, Month. And the Week starts in the month before the Month, and the Day isn't during the Week. Do we really need all this? Then there's the nascent move to which isn't going anywhere yet but maybe someday. Who did this to us???

What's the optimal way to tag things here? Use them all at once? Pick one and hope for the best?

It was hard enough when it was just deciding among * vs or . I think I want hashtag synonyms for explore/search, and synonym suggestions while composing a post.

* - the hashtag is for use only by actually autistic people to distinguish us from parents, partners, providers, and other autism-adjacent people.

I'm , I was DX'd in my mid 40's and I'm now 53. I have, of course, been my entire life but too well to be detected.

Unfortunately I've NEVER come out as Autistic to my family. They would never understand and would certainly not accept the diagnosis.

I just wish for I could tell them and know it'd go well... but it wouldn't so I won't..
